Nurses-Read this and respond to Dr. Ablow

Nurses General Nursing

I agree with many of his points actually. However, I will take issue with the intellect bloviation. Intellect need not have to relate to choice of career. Unless there exists some literature that states physicians are intellectually superior, I will call BS on his assumption. I will agree that physicians will typically have superior education in science and actual medicine.

Here's a blog post written by a Fox contributer with an entirely different view:

http://health.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/04/28/only-a-nurse-can-make-you-a-better-doctor/

It is based on the premise that only a nurse can make one a better doctor (I hope this doesn't violate terms to post it, an apology if so!).

What a wonderful blog! :redbeathe

True journalism doesn't really exist anymore. Fox news isn't any worse or any better than the rest out there....just a different slant. I miss Walter. ;)

I respectfully disagree -- and welcome a lively debate.

While I agree that journalism is in peril, Fox News has nothing to do with journalism. Keith Ablow's opinion is just that, opinion, and it was presented as such. That's editorial, and any news organization can ethically present opinion.

What Faux Noise does is present falsehoods in the guise of news; e.g., every Republican accused of sexual misconduct is initially identified as a Democrat; promos for the Sarah Palin show falsely imply that she has interviewed the subjects who will appear on her program. That's not slant. That's BS in the name of making a buck.

But I digress.

Actually, I recently saw a rough study where the average IQ was around 114. Of course it was done by a physics professor who was sort of bloviating over the average IQ of physics majors. :D

Average IQ is 100. "Average" gifted is minimum 130. Highly gifted varies, but usually starts at 145 to 160. Above that and you are genius. I do know one genius RN who is a Mensa member who became a nurse after he retired from teaching science at the local college. He's smart as a whip, but could not care less if a physician/CEO thought anymore of him than just being "him." He's very quiet and reads up to 7 novels a week--just because.

At any rate, you have to have some excellent cerebral faculties to advance in nursing...and people will know you are a "smart noodle" just by how you think, act, and communicate.

People will also know if you are not so quick to the draw----so, yes, I think we have more of the not-so-quick than the super-quick....

I'm not going to get annoyed by some idiot. So I'm not going to read it. I'm just responding to the OP.

There is documentation somewhere (I think I read it somewhere on Mensa's website...don't remember) that in order to COMPLETE medical school or even to get a PhD--requires a minimum IQ of 130.

If you read many of our own posts in this forum, there are SOOOOO many here who don't know how to spell, don't know grammar, etc., and not because they're sleepy, or tired...they just don't know.

So..perhaps there is SOME validity to it--I hate to say it, but I would tend to agree that nursing tends to attract the not-so-savvy--because of nursing's image that "anyone" can be a nurse--not that they would be able to pass anyway because the weeding out process kicks in..or did when I went to school.

As much as poor grammar drives me wild, I'm going to have to take issue with the premise of your post. Yes, there are frequent posts to this board that feature less than adequate spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and overall grammar. However, that is hardly a solid indicator of the overall intelligence of those making the mistakes.

I have had to read plenty of notes, letters, and emails from engineers, physicians, and science professors, and I can tell you I've seen a frightening number of examples of botched spelling and grammar from those very bright individuals. I can think of several off the top of my head that easily match the worst I've seen on this site. Those men and women were very intelligent in their given spheres, but simply didn't have a good grasp of general grammar. It was distressing to read, but at the same time reinforced for me the idea that there are different kinds of intelligence. People can be very gifted in one or more, but a lack of strength in one area doesn't necessarily indicate weakness in all intelligence areas.

As a former English major with a great deal of respect for the rules of our language, I feel like I need to shower after saying that! Nonetheless, it is true. So as much as it pains me to say it, we shouldn't be so quick to judge overall intelligence by the way people express themselves through language, especially written language.

I'm stepping off my soapbox now (and heading for the shower)!

The aforementioned article is not deserving of my dignified response. :)

Yeah, but will you give one that's NOT dignified?? When you get fired up, the responses are great! :yeah:

I don't want to take over this thread...but I too would love a lively debate on this subject. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. I don't believe that ABC/CBS/NBC delivers any better news. NPR might be the closet IMHO. I listen to multiple sources and hopefully try to find the truth someone in the mix of opinions and BS.

Of course is ok to present opinion in the right platform, i.e. editorial. Ablow's opinion was meant to create discord. And I think it was successful. ;) Boring doesn't sell and doesn't get anyone's attention. They knew full well when they allowed him to voice his opinion it would tick off a whole bunch of people.

Funny, but many conservatives don't support Foxnews either. :p

Oh, BTW, it was a NP mascerading as a MD that found my son's heart murmur many years ago. That was after several MDs told me it was colic. She spent the time to listen.

You should've seen what Fox News said about Mass Effect. The "psychologist" they had on hand ended up getting TONS of bad ratings on amazon.com - if you do a search for the tag 'ignorant' all her books come up.

I'll jump in :) and say I think that's exactly what that person meant by "true journalism doesn't exist anymore". And to me, they're ALL guilty of it now, they're all selling out - real reporting, real presentation has all but gone out the window in favor of sexed-up (literally and figuratively) CRAP that gets passed off as "news". Maybe it's not slant per se, but it surely ain't good journalism.

(On a side note, I wonder who'll be the first to complain about my irregular and completely deliberate grammatical choice...)

Dudes, what happened to the link? I need a good laugh and want to read this crap! Seriously!

Right so here it is in a nutshell.

Until we modify NANDA and eliminate such things as depleted energy field and impaired religiosity, nurses will never garner the respect that we crave......

Better yet - trash it all together and speak the same language as everyone else so we look a little less ridiculous - we can use medical terms and diagnoses within our scope of practice. Everyone else seems to manage it (oh, I smell a hijack and a second thread coming - I'm sorry....I just think RN Dxs make us look a bit ridiculous - just based on the roundabout and almost asinine way they're WORDED I can see where some would think our intellect was a bit impaired....).

Edited because it somehow got posted twice! Sorry!
