We all give it differently and there has to be some type of protocol or manufacturers directions but I sure can't find them anywhere.

We have given it with 4 oz of juice, 6 oz of diet soda, 6 oz of orange juice, 2 oz of Kool-aid, how do you give it? and is it protocol?

where I work we use Pepsi only for oral admin.....something about it needing to be dark carbonation...

Thats how I've learned to give it. My pt MAR usually has the same directions as prescribed by pharmacy. If I were the pt thats how id want it cause the smell is so foul! I would not want the taste to be similar to the smell.

What you dilute it with doesn't matter, as far as I know. Just tell the patient to hold their nose, and drink it down. Just kidding!!

Seriously, just dilute it in something with flavor, like OJ or grape drink. Tell the patient that it smells like rotten eggs but that it is a medication, then down the hatch.

Believe it or not...chocolate milk!

I have never administered Mucomyst orally, just IV, but when a family member was in the hospital they just used a syringe and squirted it down. I was not happy about that!

The preferred method is in OJ at my facility. But I have seen it in most any juice, cola, gingerale, and even water. The smell is horrible but the effect wonderful.

I personally ask my patient what type of juice they want it mixed with. We don't have protocol about what or how much it needs to be mixed with. Some patients have asked me to just squirt it in their mouth and they chase it with juice or water.

The directions I read says 4 oz. juice or other beverage (I think that grape or other strong flavor would be best). I measure the Mucomyst in a syringe, then pierce the juice cover with the needle and inject it, swirl it a bit, then insert straw. My patient the other night didn't even make a face when she drank it!

I saw nurses use a bulb and squirt in the patient's mouth. I have not personally given Mucomyst, so, I don't know the instructions...however, even from across the room, it was an awful smell. I only hope it doesn't taste the same to the poor patient.

where I used to work, it was mixed in a styrofoam cup of coke.

Well, I might get flamed for this but here's my honest opinion. If the pt is getting it for a legit reason then I dilute it in 6 oz of dark soda.

if the pt is getting it because they "took tylenol so I could just die" then they're gettin it full strength, undiluted with a syringe.
