How do you administer Mucomyst orally?

We all give it differently and there has to be some type of protocol or manufacturers directions but I sure can't find them anywhere.

We have given it with 4 oz of juice, 6 oz of diet soda, 6 oz of orange juice, 2 oz of Kool-aid, how do you give it? and is it protocol?

Chocolate milk if the liguid or use the gel tabs

in cold bit of cola w/lid so you can't smell it & straw. drink quickly! blech.

I have found that the best is cran-grape. Most of my pt.s seem to be ok with this, it does smell horrible. One time a friend of mine opened the vial and it flew all over her! She smelled horrible. She had to go get scrubs from OR, I don't know if she ever got the odor out of her scrubs!!

The directions I read says 4 oz. juice or other beverage (I think that grape or other strong flavor would be best). I measure the Mucomyst in a syringe, then pierce the juice cover with the needle and inject it, swirl it a bit, then insert straw. My patient the other night didn't even make a face when she drank it!

This is pure genius! I'm so going to use this next time. Might want to swab off the top of the container a bit...but I love this idea.

Back in the day when I worked in the hospital, we used the little 1oz med cups, mixed it with just a bit of a very tart cranberry juice and had the patient take it like a "shot", then chase it with the rest of the pure cranberry juice. I never had one patient complain!

Well, I might get flamed for this but here's my honest opinion. If the pt is getting it for a legit reason then I dilute it in 6 oz of dark soda.

If the pt is getting it because they "took tylenol so I could just die" then they're gettin it full strength, undiluted with a syringe.

So feeling so desperate and hopeless that you want to kill yourself is not a 'legit' reason? You must know there is something inherently wrong with this attitude, or you wouldn't have predicted a response to your post. Not all illness is physical, as I'm sure you learned in your psych rotations. I really hope you reconsider this attitude. Don't serve as proof to your suicidal patients how harsh the world can be.

As others have said, using a straw helps a lot - gets the odor a little farther away from the nose.

Well, we always tried the mix in Coke route first. It was a challenge when you had to fight with the 14 year old to drink it. And if she/he vomited afterward...we had to go with the NG tube route.

Of course, if oral was impossible because of fighting and refusal of the patient, then why try mixing in anything, go straight for the NG route...easier, faster and no taste. Only the brief discomfort of inserting the tube for the patient.

Ours comes in capsule form. I just give it like any other pill.

Surely you gest? Have you have had an NG inserted down your nose?
