What the heck is wrong with people these days!!!!

A Los Angeles woman is suing an area hospital and her anesthesiologist for allegedly putting a mustache and stickers on her face during surgery as part of a prank that she claims violated her dignity and endangered her health.

The unidentified woman, who worked as a surgical supply purchaser at the hospital, said her coworkers affixed a fake mustache above her lip and yellow tear drops below her left eye before a nurse snapped a photo, according to the suit.

"Perhaps the most vulnerable position any human being will ever endure in their life is a time when they are placed under full anesthesia," reads the lawsuit, which claims the woman was fully anesthetized rather than sedated "for the sole purpose of humiliating and embarrassing the patient."

It says that she was "fully anesthetized INSTEAD of sedated for the SOLE purpose of humiliating her. Whenever you put someone under general anesthesia there are risks, especially when its not required.

Fair enough. Though that particular accusation is not mentioned anywhere else in the article. As usual, more details would be nice.

This is seriously messed up. Just wrong. I hope she wins.

The only reason to sue would be to make sure that none of those people ever works in that health system again; otherwise, there's no case for monetary damages that I can see. Administration hates nothing so much as paying out a settlement; believe me, those foolish, silly staff members will be long gone by the time one is reached.

As they should be. I once fired a caregiver for taking a picture of one of our ALF residents and posting it on FB, even though the resident had given her permission---it's still a HIPAA violation, and just plain wrong to boot. The very old and very young---to say nothing of ANY patient under anesthesia---are all vulnerable and deserve protection. Frankly, I hope the pranksters never get to work in healthcare again......Lord only knows the country doesn't need more idiots in positions of trust.

Clearly the Nurse and anesthesiologist should be fired and suffer whatever licensing punishment is coming there way, but she isn't justified in suing for half of the things she's claiming. What was done to her is completely inexcusable, but that doesn't necessarily justify blatant greed.

I missed where it said this in the article, but if true, any licensed person knowingly involved should lose said license. To fully anesthesize someone for the sole purpose of carrying out a prank is insane. I can't believe any healthcare professional would do this.

But if its true she was only fully put under for the sole purpose of the prank, I would say she has a huge case for damages, right?

Omg! The hospital has already had priors regarding exploitation of vulnerable, anesthetized patients? And these two nutballs still have their jobs?! Yeah, I'd be suing.

Yikes, that is unbelievable.

In the picture she is not intubated.... Which would lead me to think not "fully anesthetized." Am I wrong? (Not that it matters, it just struck me). I can still see where they put her health at risk... Not even a nasal cannula while they muck around.

Apparently the staff were too busy sticking things on the patient's face and taking pictures to post to facebook than silly things like airway maitenence...

If these morons would do this to someone they know...what do they do to complete strangers.

Shortly after Valdez had been put under for the surgery, anesthesiologist Dr. Patrick Yang hatched his practical joke.

"I thought she would think this is funny and she would appreciate it," Yang said in a deposition.

Recovering from the surgery, Valdez was shown the picture by Patricia Gomez, the nursing attendant who snapped it.

"I felt violated," Valdez, who is suing her former employer for infliction of emotional distress and other damages, said in court documents. "I was in shock."

Gomez says she promptly deleted the picture from her camera, but others have testified that they saw the image, which has been presented as evidence in the case, posted to Facebook.

If while I was asleep and my co-workers treated me like that while I was asleep and vulnerable ....I'd sue their butts as well.
