Got in medical school???

I am a recent ADN grad with a Bachelor's in Biology and Psychology. I had a mediocre GPA that I managed to make competitive with my excellent nursing school grades. I have worked at a major children's research hospital for 8 years. I chose the ADN program because it was my only option for a nights/weekend program. I have NOT been able to get a job since graduating in December even at the hospital I currently work at. Under significant family pressure, I applied to medical school mostly because I never thought I would get in and could convince my family to let it go. Well, I got in!!! Through my shock, I asked my medical school contact why and he said my educational background coupled with my extensive research background made me the ideal candidate for medical school.

But, I'm not good enough to be a nurse. How does that work??

Might been mean, but I am very much looking forward to seeing those nurse managers who wouldn't hire me as a nurse when I am a MD!!!!!

In my opinion, the system is clearly flawed. Excluding ADN's is a huge disservice to the profession. We may have more to bring to the table than given credit for!!

Absolutely!!! I am CNA turned LPN turned Asn turned bsn considering med school. Go get it, although it is LOL funny in a way that u were applying to get family off ur back. They must see something in you!

Great story! Just shows you how competitive a nursing career really is. Sounds like it was meant to be so I hope you kick butt in med school and show all those hospitals and their nursing directors what they lost out on once you're back as a doctor! LOL

Congratulations...I started out as an ADN....first in my class.....and they got a great nurse......I have been a loyal employee for 29 years....I have written all the IV policies for years....I make certain we are all following current standards . I work very hard and I am very dedicated to the profession......so YES you are correct.

You're not the typical AND so I wouldn't make any sweeping statements here, but you were fortunate in that you weren't able to find a nursing position. Now you can go to the top and learn the good stuff. I can't get past the psychological barrier of having no income or life while in medical school or I'd go take physics II and the organic series and apply. Congrats!

Congrats on acceptance to med school.

However, There are many BSNs out there that have been looking for work for much longer and without success, so I seriously doubt that not finding a job in only 2-2.5 months has anything to do with excluding ADNs, but rather it likely has much more to do with the economy at this point in time.
