Feeling helpless on the job and feel like I can't do anything about it.

:redbeatheMy heart is racing as i see someone who holds a position as manager over housekeeping walk toward me to say,"you getting a admit to room......." Then try guestioning me about something related to the admit as if she's educated in my department too.A uneducated housekeeper feeling herself cause its her turn to come to work on the w/e and play manager of the day for four hour.I'm already feeling my task is too much for me to handle then have a housekeeper try to carry out like she my boss with these admit papers:angryfire.But I be nice and except the papers smile and say okay thank you.I know from that time on my w/e will be very hard.But what do I do in A situation like this.And if something isn't completed you get held for doing something wrong.I'm so stressed trying to pass pills,do treatments,talk to familes with concerns,call doctors,transcribe orders for new admit,new admit family want questions answered,fax pharmacy, give prns pain meds it goes on and on.It took me to get three admits before someone came to help me.I work medicare where all the patients are in alot of pain with new surgeries.If it takes her four hours to focus on one admit and nothing else,what make's these people think I can handle all these admits and work the floor.I feel like my license are put on the line working this way.I'm on my feet all day no break and the bad thing is I work w/e doubles.Picture starting work on Sat. morning getting out late on Sat. night like twelve and back bysix am on Sunday same busy non stop day.And little charting /paperwork done cause the work load keep you on the floor.Finally at ten you clearing the med cart tryung to set it up for the night nurse.YOU MAY BE MOSTLY DONE ON THE FLOOR NOW BUT YOU STILL HAVE FOUR HOURS OR MORE PAPERWORK.You finally go home at three or four in the morning:eek:damn!!!!!!!!Almost twenty-four hours.Is this how A nurse have to work?Is these the conditions we have to be under while taking care of people.That's not why I chose to be A nurse,to get another just time enough to swallow pills and go.MONEY look how it even make people not care how other people be treated.How do you become so heartless this way trying to save the company money who can't even put themselves in our shoes or the resudents.they only in to make money.Any DON'S out there???????You suppose to be the nuses on the floor backbone as we your backbone not our enemy and work us in such terrible situations.You yourself wouldn't put up with working this way. guess people do anything for money.Its so sad but it comes back at you cause you cause hurt to people to benefit your own happiness.SOOOOO SAD.AHAHAHAHA FEEL BETTER :loveya:JUST A LITTLE VENTING.

Let me try to understand this. You are an LPN. For 4 hours one day, the head of housekeeping was the manager of your facility. You were assigned an admission. The you had other admissions. Why is there no RN to do the admissions?

You are feeling overworked.

I'm not sure about the head of housekeeping being in charge of the facility.

In the nursing homes in my city, it is common to have a "weekend manager" come into the facility for 4 hours each day (Saturday and Sunday) to handle any issues that might arise. The weekend manager is the person on call for that weekend. It might be the housekeeping manager, the dietary manager, the administrator, DON, ADON, human resources manager, medical records manager, bookkeeper, business office manager, facility wound care nurse, staffing coordinator, or any number of people in managerial positions in the facility.

I have always despised working with the weekend managers because some of these people can become way too intrusive in nursing-related matters, acting almost as if they know how to do your job. When handling a weekend manager who is being rude or giving directives that do not make sense, you must tactfully put your foot down and tell these people that you're the nurse in charge of your floor.

I used to work weekend double shifts on a medicare skilled rehab unit of a nursing home and, yes, the workload is terrible. If you receive 3 or 4 new admissions, you must complete the paperwork on all these new patients in addition to giving meds, treatments, and routine care to your other 15 or 30 residents, dealing with hovering family members, rounding with doctors, tending to phone calls, completing the mountains of paperwork, charting, and so on.

I've never had an RN supervisor assist me with a new admission on the weekend, although that would be the ideal situation. In nursing homes in my city of residence, the LPN/LVN does his/her own initial assessments and admissions.

Are you new a nurse? Is sounds like you are in your first year and feel overwhelmed or maybe you are just working on the understaffed,unsupportive unit..is this a hospital,skilled nursing facility? Sorry but you post is a little bit confusing at time,however I get the clue that you are definitely burned out,overstressed,overwhelmed and overworked? I'm a new nurse so I cant really tell much about working conditions but from what I heard that nursing is a hard job..it sucks..plain and simple,it is sad so another nurse's spirit being killed by an horrid work conditions,little help available..never ending struggle with little hope of support...well maybe you should voice your concerns with a real management of nursing (right..sarcasm intended) or change facilities or work 5 days 8 hours,hang in there and work on your time management...I dont know but I feel for you and other nurses struggling working under those horrid conditons...

yes i must agree with the above posters.. it is very confusing . to say the least if the job is as stressing as you sound in the post .. you need to quit... i think you should repost it and make more sense.. i would really love to know what went on... please repost .. then write your 2 weeks notice and get out of that crazy place....

My heavens, this poor, overworked, overstressed nurse is reaching out for help! She's probably frantic and upset and what do some charmers here do, they correct her grammar or her writing skills.

To the OP, get out of there as soon as possible. There is nothing you can do to change them and you may not have enough time to change yourself (ie how you react to them or how you prioritize.) Give notice before you make a mistake that could hurt someone else or yourself. You are on train track and there is a locomotive heading right for you! Get off the track, calm down, and then figure out what happened, what to do next.

And forget about DONs, they are not there to help you.

Second: agree with inshallamiami:.... you came here for help/ideas, you get criticized for grammar :o:down:, do any of you think english may be a second language???????????????? How many of you have gone to another country to learn the language and work there???? If your "lost" reading OP posting, perhaps you need to look up inference in the dictionary. I know this was an important "skill" in our NET (nurse entrance test), only those who scored high were accepted into nursing school:up:.

Third: if as one poster said, you are an LPN, does your scope of practice allow you to do the initial admit assessment? If not, you are putting your license on the line. Know your state laws, or you may lose everything you worked so hard to get.

Fourth: yes, unfortunately, it is money that drives so much in health care. Don't lose sight of why you got into nursing. Remain caring and compassionate, love and teach your fellow nurse. (remember, your training your future nurse, someday it WILL be you laying in that bed;)).

Maybe you can reflect on this awful experience. Come up with some solutions to these problems, present them to your DON, in a professional way (not as a victim who complains). Maybe it will be you that will cause positive changes at your facility. If everyone 'runs' away from this place, who will initiate the changes???

Vent here, read the feedback, initiate the changes, re-evaluate, maybe you will have positive outcomes. Its just part of the nursing process. You can do it:yeah::yeah::yeah:

Dont even bother with commenting on the ones who criticize her grammar (yep makes me wonder how fluent they are in other languages with out the obvious {yer or no or thank you:loveya:),obviously they nitpicking and in my opinion the best to do is to ignore such posters.

I'm sorry your going through a rough time. Yes, nursing is a very stressful career choice! I've thought about getting out several times. The patients keep me coming back, however.

I wish you the best. You were probably stressed when you posted...it sounds like you are too overworked. Can you try to decrease your work hours...go down to part-time until you can find something else? I wish you the best.
