Just wondering how nurses feel about whether they will make it to retirement in the nursing field? Or will you end up leaving it before then?

llg (Linda) had some good advice - nurses must plan for our own future. This is the key to a successful retirement. I too, plan to work well into my retirement age because I have student loans and because what else would I do?

Hope to be out by the time I'm 55...that will be 30 years and long enough for me. The big bills will be paid by then and I can do soemthing else to put food on the table and pay the utilities. Doggie day care sounds good to me. :)

Goodness, I hope so....I'll be graduating the month I turn 51!! I certainly hope to practice a few years at least :p

Retirement?? Who's going to be able to afford to retire? I got started way too late (38) so I don't think I'll ever completely stop working......however, I won't be doing it in Med/Surg! The sheer physical stress has already taken its toll on my almost-47-year-old body, and I give it three more years, MAX, before I'll have to move on to something a little kinder to my back and feet. :uhoh21:

Whatever I do, though, it sure as heck won't be wearing a blue vest and a phony smile and parroting, "Hi, welcome to Wal-Mart".......... :uhoh3: I'm sure I'll stay in nursing, in one capacity or another, until I sign off on my final chart and keel over at my desk. :chuckle

Sadly, I kinda feel like bedside nursing isn't all that far off from this these days... :o

You've got a point there :o

I see myself doing something else, what that something else is I am not sure .

I probably won't, due to health problems mainly involving my back which began ten years ago and are becoming worse every day. It's just a matter of time before I wake up one morning and can't get out of bed.... :o

This is my problem, too. Four back injuries and constant chronic pain.

I want to get my BSN online to further my options.

No, I won't make it to retirement. I'd really like to be a stay-at-home girlfriend or a professional competitive eater!!! :chuckle

I just got my BSN 4 months ago and don't see myself in nursing for anymore than the next few years , 2-3 yrs at the most..

Definetely NO!!!

Been in nursing for 3yr, 1.5yr as an RN... already looking in to other programs to begin in January. Unfortunately, I want to do conservation & wildlife mgmt or teach physical & health education.. both don't pay to well, but if I've learned anything from nursing... I can't do a job I hate! Somehow I'll pay my bills... maybe back to my bartending days :rotfl:

FYI... I'm only 25yr old!!!

NO...I will give it 10 years...after that if I still am in the position of flux I still am....out I go with NO hard feelings! It isn't nursing I dislike...oh no, I love being a nurse...it is the general population stereotypes and being run strictly by some facility management team instead of having nursing having a larger say that is driving me out of the profession!

If you don't let nurses participate in the overall health, wellness, and administrative team of a facility...then you loose your best source..and I am finding that to be a disturbing trend!

No, I will not keep this up if things don't change from money money money to caring for the PATIENT!
