Bad Habits Nurses Develop

  1. I don't know about you, but out in the "real world" I've seen a lot of things that would not fly in school! Here are a few:

    Pre-popping pills
Not using MARs on med pass
Not washing hands/using sanitizer between patients
CNAs not wearing gloves to clean up BM
Not wearing gloves to do fingersticks

Like I said, these are just a few. Can anyone think of anything else???

i have never seen a cna not use gloves when attending a patient esp cleaning bm..very few nurses do not wash.santaize hands after being with a patient whether they are going to new pt or not
    the rest i have seen
plus giving otc meds not spec ordered by md...ie apap, mom immodium and just not charting it...poor pratice b/c the oncoming nurse is not aware of problems that pt has or that they have already been medicated

Hmmm...here are a few of mine:

    Read the obits

Avoid really sickly looking elderly people in stores on days off (I know this is horrible)

I didn't wash my hands always between patients

A few times I didn't wear gloves for hard IV sticks (That really IS Bad)

Just to name a few...Now that I work in NICU though I've change those alot...I always wear gloves...I'm totally obsessive about handwashing....have become totally anal in general. Don't really read the Obits that much because the likelyhood of me seeing a patient that I cared for is little (not that I WANT to...don't get me wrong). I still avoid frail old people on days off...critique medical dramas....and eat standing up.

BCMA(BAR CODE MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION) is much easier to work with
than MARS is to work with.

along the lines of checking to see if there is a full moon:

forgetting to bring my crystal ball so I can read the doctor's minds.

You also need those crystal balls to do over-the-phone labor checks, and to tell the pts. how many more hours until the baby is born or when you think they will go into labor.

Fortunately have yet to see anyone, CNA or licensed nurse clean up BM without using gloves.

    Have see the rest though.

Here are a couple of bad habits that almost all the nurses I work with have -

forgetting to use the bathroom for 12 hours (urologists love us!) and with that forgetting to eat or drink water just in case the need to use the bathroom rears its ugly head.

(this little figure is the nurse emptying the foley and having the gentle reminder about having not peed for 12 hours)
    :roll
