GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Thank you for posting this, I guess my last post wasn't incorrect as some as some people thought it was.

For those you are keeping up with the Georgia situation here's an update I received in my email.

Again, sounds positive but also a lot of may this ...may that. Hopefully the Ga bon will come up w/ some decision at this Nov. meeting for at least the students that are currently enrolled so we can move on with this part of our lives.

Earlier this month we reported on our meeting with the Education Committee of the Board of Nursing and engaged the Committee in consideration of a compromise solution that could allow the Board to move forward with licensing of Excelsior's graduates. It is our current understanding that the Board is reviewing our proposals and may actively consider them during its November 12-14 meeting.

In keeping with our primary emphasis on our recent graduates and currently enrolled students, we proposed that all students who have graduated since the Board ceased licensing Excelsior graduates on July 1, 2008 and all students who enrolled in the program prior to August 1, 2008 be eligible for licensure without additional stipulations, regardless of their graduation date. We proposed other compromise solutions that addressed future students and the concerns of the Board as we understand them.

While the Board takes our proposals under consideration, we continue to provide them with information they may request and to seek the support of employers and others in this matter. We will be in attendance at the November meeting of the Board and will provide you with an update as soon as possible following the meeting.

Sincerely,

M. Bridget Nettleton, Phd,
RN

I am keeping my fingers crossed that GA will realize that they are missing out on a lot of great nurses. People won't stop going to Excelsior. They will just plan on leaving the state when they get finished with school.

I wonder how many Master's degrees would be taken away if we didn't recognize any online programs. I know a lot of nursing instructors that received there degrees that way.

Just want to wish good luck to those affected by this fiasco.

I'm really hoping everything turns out in our favor here in Ga!!!!! This whole fiasco began(or we all found out about it) as I was attempting the CPNE a few months ago. It was just one more thing(huuuuge thing) to worry about on top of a mountain of stressors!!!!

I'm really hoping the GBON makes the right decision.

Based on info I've received from someone close to the situation, the BON will not change their stance. They say the only way this situation can be reversed is through legislative means. Also, no one will "grandfather'd-in" because BON said they do not have the authority to do so. Sorry, nothing will change this year. From what I understand, unname nursing schools are supporting BON in their efforts.

I don't know how you could say that as we got a letter stating, and it has been posted, about the changes that are going to take place. This meeting this week will hopefully clear up any misunderstanding with this new law. Us students have worked hard to be where we are right now and not knowing where we are going to work and knowing we can't work in the state of GA has made many of us mad. I am not happy with you saying something like this regardless if you know someone close to the situation. The BON better get their act together or this state will lose very valuable nurses.

This is really not a helpful post in that it is negative and unsupported speculation. You may indeed be correct, but if you cannot validate your statement, it would be best to keep this opinion to yourself until the Board makes an official statement.

This issue is near and dear to the hearts of many students who eagerly pour through posts looking for positive reinforcement.

I believe the letter states the proposed changes. Don't get me wrong, I am hoping that everything gets worked out.

I wonder what the process is to get legislature changed. Does anybody know?
