GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Just curious if anyone had any new news? I am really considering going ahead and applying for the CPNE since the GNA/Excelsior feel that this will be worked out.

This info is heartbreaking, I would like to know is there anything that can be done regarding a person that has paid for this education, to get his/her money back. Is there a chance that a class action lawsuit could be filed if GA totallys say "NO" we aren't accepting Excelsior anymore. I feel that it is a waste of time and money and that's heartbreaking. I hope that that wont be their decision but just thinking ahead if it is......

The only way I can see any chance of a class action suit would be if we find out that grads from traditional schools outside of GA are getting licenses even though they don't have the clinical hours that GA wants, and in that case all it will do is stop the others from getting their license.

I think the thing that people are missing is the LAW that is driving this. We need to keep the heat on our legislators, to help with this nursing shortage and pass laws that help and not hinder us.

I guess I'm just thinking of the nurses in GA that have paid or are paying all of this money towards the program and there's nothing that can be done about it at this point and we're stuck in limbo waiting to see what the outcome is. I know that right now relocating isn't an option for me. I'm still paying monthly for the program and I haven't paid this month, I called Distance Learning to find out what I could do to have my monthly payments lowered and I was told to call back in Nov. because it's nothing that can be done until after they have the monthly meeting (GABON) which is going to be held on the 16th of Nov. I hope there's good news because it's about to go into collections.

This is one of the problems that nurses have. Boards of Nursing really don't have any responisbilty to the nurses in the state. Their role is regualtory role geared toward providing competent nursing care to the residents of the state. What is unusal in this particular battle is that Excelsior has the support of the Georgia Nurses Association. I don't remember reading anywere that the CA nurses association or the VA nurses association were involved supporting nrses. Boards of Nursing nation wide don't make a lot of sense sometimes because it is a mix of politics with nursing. I worked in a state that allowed to to remove Pa catheteters, central lines, and A-Lines, but I couldn't take out the sutures that were holding them in place. I know, it doesnt' make sense.

Not that it is going to be any help for those in limbo right now, but getting/staying active in the nurses association as well as proffesional associations and keeping tabs on pending legislation should be an important task for all nurses of all levels. I

I would't give up on anything yet. I'd do the CPNE, get licenses in one of the surrounding states and see what happens. Once your an RN, maybe that "moving isn't an option" might become a "I found the dream job" somewhere else.

Keep you mind open, and keep looking for options. Thre has been some grant money floating around, and there seems to be more options for LPN - RN bridge programs. And who knows, other states have started PAramedic-RN bridge programs. At least there is continued dialoge out there. Responses from some of the politicians has been positive also.

I spoke with my advisor at EC today, one thing they ask the Ga. BON for was to allow enrolled students until Dec. 09 to finish like VA. did. She also said the CPNE was not going away. Leo2

Well, if Excelsior is asking the BON for Dec 09, then that means to me that a resolution is coming. I am done, actually did the CPNE is July, before I even knew of the changes coming and planning on taking the NCLEX next week to be completely done. I am hoping that a grandfather clause will help those of us who are done with the program. I hope that something comes out of this next month.

I'm hoping they will do like CA and allow us the allotted time to finish as in the time that EC gives us to complete the whole program (7 yrs). While I may be able to complete the theory exams well before that date; when you factor in the wait time for the CPNE I as well as some others I'm sure will be out of luck. :banghead::banghead:

EC would certainly move you to the head of the CPNE line if you're in a state where the window is closing. They did it for Maryland students in 2007 to make sure they finished on time.

This is very odd...I too called Excelsior and GNA and was told that there were NO CHANGES as of yesterday; GaBON HAS NOT changed its position and we will not know anything further until the November board meeting. There is no new information. I didn't get this information from an advisor, but someone in higher authority. Everyone is hopeful that this situation will resolve for the better, however spreading false hope or incorrect information is not acceptable.

If I'm reading it correctly, Leo2 is only saying that they have requested a deadline like the Virginia BON gave, not that they've received one.

I understood the post clearly, however the information posted in still incorrect and nonfactual. I once again called Excelsior and spoke with an assistant dean, not an advisor, and no specific information/details regarding the proposed compromise has been specifically discussed with students. I then contacted GNA (again) and was told by the persons who are assisting with this licensing issue, that they had never heard of this information.

Therefore, stating that there is a requested deadline(like that given by Virginia) is not accurate. This is providing the graduates affected false hope.

I am sad for the state of GA for I know that they have lost another great nursing graduate from Excelsior. She called me last night, after she had put her resume out there and she said she has been flooded by calls from various states. More than three hospitals sent her plane tickets/hotel/car for an interview this week. They are offering her huge signing bonuses, tuition repayment, benefits, and great pay.

I personally did rotations with this lady and I know she made a difference with every patient she came into contact.

So all of the Excelsior grads that are feeling a little shafted, hold your head up high and realize you are valuable team member.
