GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Therefore, stating that there is a requested deadline(like that given by Virginia) is not accurate.

Leo2 is not the first person to mention this, so I can only guess that some EC advisors are saying it. We can only go by what little information EC chooses to dole out on the matter. Thanks for your current input -- I know it would really be nice for those of you in Georgia to know the details of what they've requested, since the GBON is are apparently considering it!

you shouldn't assume its not correct, and we all need a little hope right now, at least I know that I do. Leo2

I understood the post clearly, however the information posted in still
incorrect and nonfactual
. I once again called Excelsior and spoke with an assistant dean, not an advisor, and
no specific information/details regarding the proposed compromise has been specifically discussed with students
. I then contacted GNA (again) and was told by the persons who are assisting with this licensing issue, that they had never heard of this information.

Therefore,
stating that there is a requested deadline(like that given by Virginia) is not accurate
. This is providing the graduates affected false hope.

I didn't make any assumptions. I asked directly from assistant deans and the GNA representatives because I wanted to have the most accurate and updated information. I wanted to talk to the people on the front lines. I realize that this is very frustrating for everyone directly affected in Georgia. I am hopeful, but realistic. I will not be deterred by the GaBON actions and am preparing for alternate options. Good luck!

I'am just like everyone else here if I hear news I pass it on. Leo2

A gentle reminder to all:

Please, let's debate the topic, and not each other. There is much uncertainty surrounding this issue, and I think it's safe to say that those of you who are affected by this the most are not getting the straight answers you deserve.

This is a time for everyone to come together. United we stand, divided we fail. ;)

I agree...the worst thing we could do right now is fight among ourselves. We have all received contradicting information at some point and time through the process....just refer to the very beginning of the post when many of us were being told by the GABON that there was no licensing issue only to find out that they ARE denying licensure :( There is not a day that goes by that this issue isn't at the forefront of my thoughts it has completely turned my life upside down :banghead: I should be studying and preparing for the CPNE but at this point I haven't even applied due to the decision. I am still holding out hope that some compromise will be met but preparing for the worst. I believe we deserve some straight answers but at this point don't believe we will get them until this whole ordeal is over with.

That is why I have been reluctant to pass on the information I received from a member of the Education Committee for the Georgia Board of Nursing. She is the RN program director for the college where I work.

Florida accepts EC graduates, LPN's are allowed to sit for the boards here in Florida. Surgical Techs, & Respiratory Therapists no longer are allowed, unless you were one of the original students, that were enrolled at the time when the board made its decision. Paramedics can get licensure by endorsement, work two years in another state and then they can transfer in. The big problem with these boards of nursing is they are changing the rules while people are currently enrolled, with NO provisions for them. If you dig a little deeper into the situation in these states you will find that the enrollment at the nursing schools are waaaay down. Who do you thinks sits on these boards? It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the real reason behind the push to ban EC students. Take into account the EC national average is HIGHER than most traditional programs?? HMMMMM, sounds fishy to me.:nurse:

No, please post. Ifyou no anything and your getting it from a respectable source like someone on Education committe or GBON or has a contact with someone who does...please post. I want to stay informed on the details because excelsior is not posting any info until after each meeting. Do you know how things are going or will they come to a conclusion at the NOV meeting? Any info, in my opinion is better than no info. I'm not holding anyone to their word unless it is a statement from GBON,GNA, or excelsior.

Same here I would love to hear any info you might have!

For those you are keeping up with the Georgia situation here's an update I received in my email.

Again, sounds positive but also a lot of may this ...may that. Hopefully the Ga bon will come up w/ some decision at this Nov. meeting for at least the students that are currently enrolled so we can move on with this part of our lives.

Earlier this month we reported on our meeting with the Education Committee of the Board of Nursing and engaged the Committee in consideration of a compromise solution that could allow the Board to move forward with licensing of Excelsior's graduates. It is our current understanding that the Board is reviewing our proposals and may actively consider them during its November 12-14 meeting.

In keeping with our primary emphasis on our recent graduates and currently enrolled students, we proposed that all students who have graduated since the Board ceased licensing Excelsior graduates on July 1, 2008 and all students who enrolled in the program prior to August 1, 2008 be eligible for licensure without additional stipulations, regardless of their graduation date. We proposed other compromise solutions that addressed future students and the concerns of the Board as we understand them.

While the Board takes our proposals under consideration, we continue to provide them with information they may request and to seek the support of employers and others in this matter. We will be in attendance at the November meeting of the Board and will provide you with an update as soon as possible following the meeting.

Sincerely,

This gives me hope. I'm very optimistic; cautious, but optimistic nevertheless. At least an effort is being made by EC and GNA on our behalf and I appreciate everything that is being done for us.
