Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
I think that the BON is wide open for a lawsuit and that even though they would like to ride their high horse and make no compromises, they'd better keep their minds open. The law change is so vaguely worded that even our greatest supporters now (GNA) did not derive any threat to Excelsior or legitimate online schools and endorsed the law change when it was proposed. I don't see it standing up to any kind of serious legal challenge and if our legislators had any sense they should never approve any law or change with wording "or any other requirements deemed necessary by the Board". Too open to discrimination. Also, they can't just change the rules overnight. I don't care that they say the proposal has been out there since January. See above. I scrutinized their (BON) website before I even looked at Excelsior and saw no trace that things might be changing. We're all waiting to see if they do the right thing esp. re: grandfathering but if not I do plan to talk to a lawyer of my own.
Oueu,
I, just like you, scrutinized the website and I saw no mention of pending changes/legislature either. I even printed some of the information that was found on their site when these "changes" took place. There wasn't any mention of denial of endorsement on the website until well after the fact.
I just saw this on Fox 5 Atlanta:
The decision was made by the BON to deny licensure to EC grads, even while the Governor's office has stated that they are in favor of granting licenses to EC's graduates. It will probably take an amendment in the wording of this law to overcome this obstacle. Otherwise, they can just continue to deny licensure to some of Georgia's best nurses.
Anybody have friends at the Capitol?
I just saw fox 5 atlanta last night as well and was some what shocked by the Ga BON holding on to their orginal decision. I surely that some compromise would have took place. I'm glad to hear that some legal action will probably be taken because they need a lawsuit thrown at them or at least the threat of one. Excelsior shoud post or send out their offical statements. I had a concept test scheduled for today....I cancelled it last night. As many, I'm trying to stay optimistic and continue to pray but I'm discourged and not motivated to study. I feel for those you who are finished or just CPNE away and have spent way more time and money. I was in the middle of the program and now I don't know if I should continue to study and testing hoping next year it's overturned or just wait until it actually happens. Like others going to a traditional school at this point is not possible because of work or family. Moving is out for some of us as well because of our spouses job or if your single w/kids you may family support with the care of them. Driving to local states like fox 5 stated...is possible for some...I know that would be 21/2 hr or more commute each way for me and I don't want to do that the rest of my working career. I just don't know what to do now. I'm going to try calling an advisor today and seeing what they suggest.
Does anyone know of any states where their orginal decision was overturned by legal action or appeal? I'm just wondering from past cases to draw from. I know Virginia compromised and are giving student to the end of next year...so no legal action was necessary. ( Most states are reasonable and have heart) What happened in California a few years back...I know they no longer accept EC grads w/o experience but for those who where in the mist of that drama where they grandfathered in immediately or did take legal action?
The BON sought no legal counsel in making their decision???? Excuse me, but wart the fog??? It's like they're so power-drunk they don't even take this seriously. Of course, also convinces me even more that they couldn't stand up to any real legal challenge. Also bodes well that other states all have/had some kind of transition program (grandfathering). IMO Excelsior should be coordinating a class action suit and taking off the "nice" gloves at this point. If they don't, then, hey guys, let's stay in touch out here and seriously coordinate an effort ourselves. Stay strong!
Also, according to Fox 5 Atlanta, the Office of the Governor had voiced its support of licensing EC graduates, yet we've still arrived at this point. What gives? What will it take to reach a fair and just conclusion to this?
Hi Everyone, I just spoke with the State Board Office at Excelsior College, and this is what I was told:
1. The Governor of Georgia is IN FAVOR of licensing Excelsior graduates
2. Excelsior is now working with the office of the Governor, and there are attorneys involved.
3. Excelsior will issue an officcial statement Monday or Tuesday.
In my opinion, if the Governor's office favors licensure of EC grads, then the board should follow, given that they are APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR.
Don't give up yet; you have the Governor, the Ga. Nurses Association, and many others behind you.:redbeathe
