found the "weeding out" class

Published

I'm currently taking "Clinical Calculations". It is required for ALL health programs- RTA, PTA, EMT, Nursing. It consists of dosage, drip rates, ped dosage, etc. We started this summer with 16 and we are down to 8. I have a 98% so far, but it is hard. Some of the people who dropped also dropped it last semester! I believe it may be one of the weed out classes- its required and difficult. We have homework due before every exam-this week I turned in 35 pages of problems!!

BTW- you must complete this class with a C or better to get into PHARMACOLOGY- a course that is not required but everyone takes BEFORE getting into NS, for the experience & the extra preference points! I'm taking it this fall- I'm sure we'll see the same drop rate. :specs: Keep studying!

Congratulations on the good grades. Keep up the good work!

Strange, but I thought "Dosages and Calculations" was one of the slide easy courses. Go figure! LOL

You're right. That calculations course is a killer, but an excellent start to a nursing program. I took it last semester since ccconline teaches it also. It was only a one credit class, but boy was it hard.

You can make it! Keep working hard and it will pay off in the end:)

Wicked easy after a semester of college algebra and 2 chems!

ya- with my first degree I took chem I&II, Organic I, and 2 semesters of physics, BUT it was over 12 years ago and this stuff is different somehow. Maybe because I've got more riding on it this time :)

OH I hated algebra-thank goodness my hubby has a masters in math!

Congrats. Calculations are getting more and more press due to med errors. Every time you change jobs, and sometimes when you advance in a facility, math/med tests will be presented. Every day you work on the floor you will be responsible for math/med problems. Sounds like you are on you way!!!!

Seems like you are going to get a very good grade. Keep up that 98%. Good luck to you :)

LOL!! The REAL weeedout course comes later...its called Pharmacology... the most difficult course to teach and the most demanding course for future nurses IMHO. My class (and all my friends' classes) dropped the most potential nurses during this course...they just couldn't take it. So much to understand...and a bad grade is unacceptable. Good luck! :)

I have Pharmacology this fall! I'm sure it will be the same story there. Actually, you have to complete "clinical calculations" to even get in the class- so I've seen a huge drop in Pharm enrollment already- people expected to do calc this summer :) Yep- you gotta make at least B for it to count for anything.

I've started reading for it already- and I don't start until August 26th!

:p AND Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement!!

I have to agree with Matt'smom, Pharmacology is turning into a real nighmare. We have to take it in the summer between our first and second year of our ADN program. I was hoping for a little bit of a reprieve from critical thinking questions, but oooooohhhhhhh NO. And critical thinking questions for Pharm really suck LOL. I went through the first year of school going week to week. Completing one thing before I even let my brain move to something else, and Pharm is no diff. Week by week,,test by test. I remember in first semester other students talking about next year, I said heck, i have test next week, and dont have any thouhgts beyond that test. Once it's over, I'll move to the next week. But I can't seem to get my brain working that far ahead as what might happen next year. Let's get this one over before we move on. Now that the first year is over, have my brain working on Pharm, and will worry about fall once I get through this summer.

Have A Great Day and Be Safe

Good luck to all of you...it IS doable...just a huge challenge! :)

Thanks, I have a Pharmacology course coming up in my RN to BSN program. (We didn't take a separate course in ADN school, it was all incorporated into the program).
