Forced to get flu shot or wear a mask

Published

Recently I heard our hospital will be forcing everyone to get a flu shot or they will have to wear a mask for their entire shift. I have had a reaction to it and usually just boost my immune system during flu season and this works well. I was told that even if we have had a reaction in the past and still don't get it, we wear a mask. This does not sit well with many of us at the hospital. Was wondering if others have experienced this and what they did.

The refusal to vaccinate, while aggravating, doesn't really affect me personally until.....UNTIL a newborn (too young to vaccinate) is infected with whooping cough by a 5 year old purposely unvaccinated child in the pediatrician's waiting room.

Then, it REALLY bothers me that folks believe that they have the right to cause harm to others.

It really bothers me as well as a former ER nurse.

I've been following the story of Riley, a young baby who died of whooping couch in Australia. His parents have mounted a campaign to educate about how important it is to get your kids vaccinated. I'll link their FB page.

Riley Hughes was born a gorgeous and healthy baby boy on February 13th, 2015. He was our second child and we were so delighted to have him in our family.

At three weeks of age, he started displaying mild cold-like symptoms, and developed an occasional cough. We called out a locum, who assured us he was fine. However instincts took over, and after a night where he slept a lot and barely woke for his usual two-hourly breastfeed, we knew something wasn't right. We took him straight to our local children's hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, Western Australia.

Riley was admitted that afternoon, and at first it was thought he had bronchiolitis. Pretty quickly, the doctors suspected pertussis (whooping cough) and began treating him for it. On the 4th day of his hospital stay, he was taken to PICU with pneumonia, and his swab tests confirmed he did indeed have whooping cough. He grew steadily worse and worse, and despite all the best medical intervention, Riley passed away in our arms the next afternoon, at just 32 days old.

While Riley was dying in hospital, we discovered that women in the UK, USA, Belgium and New Zealand were being recommended a whooping cough vaccine in their third trimester. This vaccine, usually given between 28-32 weeks gestation, provides the unborn baby with the necessary antibodies to protect them from this terrible disease. Since the introduction of this pregnancy vaccine, the UK has seen a reduction in infant deaths from pertussis by over 90%.

Two days after Riley's death, our state government announced the introduction of a program where these third trimester booster shots would be offered free of charge to pregnant women. Other states soon followed, and now all states and territories in Australia have free whooping cough booster shots for pregnant women.

We seek to educate people about the dangers of whooping cough, and positively promote the need for vaccination.

Our mission is to protect other children and families from suffering a similar loss from a vaccine-preventable disease.

Is it true in Chicago they forbid the use of ketchup on hotdogs punishable by the death penalty?

Funny - had a discussion with daughter-in-law who only put ketchup on her corn dog and who couldn't understand how important MUSTARD is for hot dogs/corn dogs.

He's not anti-vax as far as I know. He's a proponent of an alternative schedule, but he's not clear-cut anti-vax.

He's anti-vaxx/anti-science because he gives parents incorrect advice that puts children at risk along with immunosuppressed individuals.

His stance has been criticized by fellow pediatricians for misinforming parents about the in-depth testing of vaccines and downplaying the dangers of vaccine-preventable diseases.

The flu vaccine is not a live virus, it is impossible to get the flu from the vaccine. That being said, if you don't get it every year your body's immune response in creating the antibodies (the whole point of the vaccine) will cause some flu like symptoms. You'll feel achy from the cells working overtime in your bone marrow and you'll have a low grade fever as part of the inflammatory response, your body produces more mucus to trap any flora in your nose and keep it out of your lungs. This should only last a day or two tops. If you are on immunosuppressant therapy (depending on the type and the indication) every vaccine you get including the flu shot needs to be conversation with your doctor. People on immunosuppressive therapy, allergies to vaccines, immunosuppressed due to illness, or have other contraindications are the people we get the vaccines for. If they can't get immunized, enough healthy people need to get immunized to protect them with herd immunity. Herd immunity (unlike what all the new aged moms in the suburbs think) is very fragile. For most vaccines upwards of 94% of the population needs to be vaccinated for it to work. When the percentage goes down we get outbreaks... epidemiology 101. That's how developed countries like France have measles outbreaks and have children dying in hospitals from diseases doctors haven't seen in 3 generations.

1. I have never seen anyone with a severe allergic response to the flu shot. I would like to hear details from someone who had this experience.

2. I have seen many people who experienced guillian barre from having a cold or flu. They were told by neurologist to wait a year before getting another flu shot and no live vaccines.

3. Just a thought, being comfortable on the job is always guaranteed. If you really don't want to get the flu shot, you can still stay in nursing, maybe as a traveller, avoiding flu season.

just this week I had my 1st experience with a severe allergic reaction to the shot, I'm still a little pissed off at myself but let me explain the story and why I am upset with myself.

As you can tell by my name I'm a CMA, so I work at a clinic. Another MA let's call them Sam came up to me and told me room 3 needed a flu shot and Sam had the sheet the PT fills out in her hands. I look at it and extend my hand to take it from her so I can read it for myself. Sam shoves it in a pile of papers and orders me to just get going on the shot. Here is where I made my big mistake I could have very well refused until she handed over the paper, because if I had look at that paper I would have seen she said yes to being allergic to chicken, egg or chicken feathers. (That's basically the question we ask along with the other ones) I will never do that again and if anyone questions me why this story is why.

The clinic I work at has student Dr.s around one of them came up to me with the sheet of paper I never saw and asked if I gave her the vaccine. To which I then explained the story of Sam and how she didn't let me look it. Well there it was on the paper, she would have been in bad condition but we had everything we needed at the clinic and started on her right away. We didn't need to call 911 She was OK with just our treatments.

We caught her reaction as it 1st started and our Dr dropped everything and went to her side. I don't think her breathing was effected but who knows what could have happened. I remember seeing benedryl wrappers in the room but with the student Dr helping I didn't want to just be in the way. So I didn't stay in the room. You know how it is if you aren't doing something useful stay out of the room because no matter how big a room is it can become mighty small mighty quickly when an emergency is going on. So if I'm not part of the solution I get out of the way.

The 10% off only applies to GMO foods.

But I love GMOs! :inlove:

10% isn't much of a discount. But if the foods are GMO count me in! [/quote']

If you are in the US, the Affordable Care Act mandates that flu and other vaccines be covered without any copayment or coinsurance. Your insurance company can require that you get it from your provider or at certain locations, but it must be no cost to you.

You are right! This past year - for the first time - I did get it for free. Thanks for reminding me.:)

Boost Your Immune System (or Not)

Is "boosting your immune system" for real? Is that possible, and can you really buy it in a bottle?

by Brian Dunning

The immune system is more complex than quantum physics and thermodynamics combined.

Studies of concentration camps (WW II in Europe) showed that when epidemics of contagious diseases,i.e., measles, swept through the camps the inmates survived better than the relatively well fed, well clothed, guards!

These threads boost my blood pressure!

Sounds interesting considering the prisoners were only fed stale bread and whatever soup they could get. Stale bread has little to no nutrition. I figure the immune system weakens when the body isn't fed enough nutrients.

This is the specific story I've been following since last year and have also been following this family on their FB page "Light for Riley".

It is a heartbreaking story but also a heartwarming one that this family chose to stand up and tell their story and vaccination laws are now changing in Australia.

That's some pretty incredible biofeedback control you've got there.

I had what I think was H1N1 when it was going around, I say think because I never dragged myself into ER to be tested.

I never want to be that sick again. My temp went up, I took Tylenol, it came down for about 2 hours, went back up, took Advil, went down for about 2 hours, went back up. And so forth, for about 3 days. I got SOB going from the couch to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. At one point, I was lying on then nice cold bathroom floor, asking for death. While the cat sat next to me and said please fill my bowl before you die. Thank you.

i hurt everywhere. The smallest thing left me SOB. I drank only tea and ate only toast.

it was weeks before I felt like myself again. For weeks I had this bitter taste in my mouth that effected my appetite. I was exhausted for weeks.

Never again.

i get the flu shot religiously now.

I go by the $100 test. Would you bend over to pick up a hundred bucks? If so, probably not influenza.

If there is not a risk than why do they actually give a disclaimer presenting the rare risk of GB in the pamphlet when you are getting your flu shot? I don't remember for sure, but I do think they even mentioned the vaccine compensation board in the pamphlet from last year. Also they always used to give the flu vaccine without any written acknowledgement of possible side effects to the patients, but now every patient gets a handout mentioning possible side effects from the common and minor to the rare and the serious.

To those that aren't forced to receive the flu vaccines it is making the rounds and being promoted so it may be soon coming to you. Before I was aware of the risk of GB I had no concern about the flu shot, but after learning of it and witnessing first hand bad cases of GB and seeing patients who were permanently harmed from it I don't want the vaccine. Many of my fellow coworkers feel the same way, but most are not independently wealthy that they can quit or retire. All the healthcare systems where I live mandate the flu vaccine. While most who get GB will recover, it can be a long recovery of 6 months to a year and some do not recover, others recover somewhat but not fully.

Do you choose to drive? Do you ever consume raw milk cheese? Do you eat raw cookie dough? All examples of activities that are acknowledged to be potentially dangerous but people still decide to engage in because they are terrible at judging risk. Also see: refusing vaccination.

GB is an acknowledged risk, but it is far less likely to occur than the risk of complications from influenza.
