"PT" means Physical Therapist. If you cannot bring yourself to type out "patient", the correct abbreviation is "pt".

It's LOSE your license, not "loose" your license. I've seen this one so often I'm starting to type "loose" myself.

"Needless to say" means it is so obvious that you don't even need to point it out. Why do people persist on using this when it is neither obvious or even remotely likely?

Why is "NETY" even still a thing?

English is a living language, so people being consistently wrong can actually make something right over time. All these people ya'll are complaining about are simply progressive.

"Y'all"

Ain't is also in the dictionary but not proper English. If people choose to accept it then good for them. I will continue to pass.

Again, I agree, and cringe when I hear any of these. Unfortunately, as Sour Lemon so eloquently stated, it is likely that their use is sure to become accepted.

Well, good to know. I also always thought it was, "Tow the line." And thank you for including the origin of the meaning.

As usual, I thought I was the only one in the world who was/is bothered by grammar mistakes, so common today. I find some cringe worthy. So thanks to all who posted here their contributions, many that are quite amusing.

Language does evolve. Eventually we'll all just grunt at each other.

I believe you are right, Horseshoe. We are headed that way.

Accepted/excepted confusion

ATM machine = automated teller machine machine

With au jus = with with juice

Shrimp scampi = shrimp shrimp

Vwahla or walla (and variations) for "voila", French word meaning "here it is." (You get a pass if you can't put the proper accent on the a, as I can't on this keyboard)

Medications: generics are never capitalized (aspirin, baclofen, oxycodone, morphine, mannitol, fentanyl). Trade names are: (OxyContin, Percocet, Avinza, Duragesic)

e.g. ( for exemplia gratia”) means for example” and is always followed by a comma. It gives the reader examples of a class of nouns. Example: …benzodiazepines, e.g., lorazepam (Ativan), diazepam (Valium), and temazepam (Restoril).” The zoo has a special interest in preserving and breeding endangered felines, e.g., the Florida panther.”

i.e. means it/that is,” or, that means.” It is also followed by a comma, and alerts the reader that a definition or clarification is coming up.

Example:

A functional capacity evaluation on May 7 revealed that 91% of the criteria tested indicated evidence of overt symptom disability exaggeration, i.e., evidence of malingering.”

The evaluation revealed a woman with somatoform tendencies, i.e., the expression of emotional conflicts in physical symptoms.”

Diseases, signs, and diagnoses are not capitalized unless they are named for someone, e.g., ….major depression, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barré syndrome, Guyton's contracture, and Parkinson's disease (PD).”

….unless they are given as part of a DSM definition for a psych diagnoses:

Major Depression with Psychosis.”

And the latest trendy phrase that just sets my teeth a-grinding: "I graduated nursing school." No, schools graduate students. Students graduate from schools.

That” is used before a restrictive clause, required for the meaning of the sentence: Gems that sparkle often elicit forgiveness.”

Cars that have hybrid technology get better gas mileage.”

Which” is used everywhere else—a nonrestrictive clause that doesn't change the meaning of the sentence if it's removed. Nonrestrictive clauses are also enclosed by commas, a good clue.

Diamonds, which are expensive, often elicit forgiveness.” (Diamonds often elicit forgiveness)

Cars, which consume gasoline, are the number one cause of pollution in the LA basin.” (Cars are the #1 cause of pollution…)

Oh, god, I could go on and on....

This needed a beverage alert. Fortunately there was not a keyboard involved as I am on my phone.

My grade: I give this a 9.8/10. 0.1 deduction for not spelling it grammer. And a 0.1 deduction because my brain was screaming while reading it even though I knew it was tongue in cheek.

I hear this all the time, especially about students "graduating high school." Where did this come from? Is this accepted now?
