In my opinion its annoying that facilities make us get flu vaccines.
The vaccine is only viable for one season, it doesn't even protect you for a long time like the other vaccines.
Its all of them want you to get the flu vaccine or you will be suspended from work or if you're a student, you will not be allowed to do rotations.
Is it a conspiracy? What are they putting in our bodies every year?!
I don't know,
I just cant get over that news I watched a while where a woman who was healthy but then, got a dystonia from a flu shot.
I know, I sound paranoid... Lol
last time I got a flu shot, my whole body was shaking....I tried to tell myself there no risk.No danger *just breathe*
.....just another panic attack ..I'm being unreasonable....... Why is this bothering me?
Am I having a panic attack ? "breathe" ... I can do this ...it's just a shot right?
Why am I being such a baby? STOP being such a baby and suck it up!!
The nurse puts the needle into my arm and I try to say nothing ....act like it's no big deal
I come home and lay down. I think I'm going to be okay...I kinda have to be. I'm shaking .....and I start to cry .
I thought I was okay with this ...what's wrong with me?
shaking .....everything is just shaking right now ....
Having any form of medical treatment against your will is wrong. NO body has the right to tell you what to think or feel .....
We can dictate the use of seat belts for drivers and underage passengers alike d/t it being a public health concern (seat belts in rare circumstances can kill you and definitely can injure you), because the good of seat belts far outweigh any significant negative side effects. Likewise, healthcare workers who work with sick and/or immunocompromised patients can be mandated to have their vaccinations up to date. You can choose not to drive and you can also choose not to work in the healthcare field. The big difference is even if don't work in the health care field and choose not to be vaccinated you would still be more vulnerable to catching vaacine preventable infections and likewise remain a public health threat. When we come out with vaccines that are 100% percent effective every time for every person then we can allow consenting adults to risk their own lives, but until that time the public relies on herd immunity and vaccines should be mandated.
...Please give me longitudinal studies on those that have gotten flu shots for a lifespan of career, say 10-20 years conservatively. I think I'll let you be that guinea pig. :)
I'm sorry, but the right to autonomy is a fundamental human right. Shame on you if you feel different.
I guess I'm reduced to just watching, observing ..and sticking my thumb up my orifice .

I am not your personal researcher designed to quell your adversity to becoming informed on the subject of vaccines.
Longitudinal studies on the safety and efficacy of vaccines are ongoing all the time. That is the one of the main reasons for the VAERS system. Scientists all over the world track disease rates in the public and specific subsets of the public at least annually to look for increased incidences of diseases/illnesses. Those epidemiologists then look for any reason for increases and/or decreases in a disease. These ongoing epidemiological studies are the health pulse checks of any country's public health.
The first wide-spread use of flu vaccines was seen with the military in WWII. So, before the 1940's the large studies of the effects of flu vaccine effectiveness and safety have been studied. The fact that we can trace the safety and efficacy of flu vaccine back to the early 1900's says a lot for the safety of the flu vaccine. There is not a major disease, except old age, that I know that has increased in incidence since the advent of the influenza vaccine.
The only guinea pigs in this are the people that are too ignorant to receive vaccines based on poor judgement and are just waiting for themselves to get sick, their patients, and/or loved ones based on that ignorance and poor judgement.
I totally understand and I am just interested to see what the connection was/is to the flu vaccine. I will see what I can pull up later. I have had a couple of really rare complications happen to my surgical patients, non anesthesia related, where at least one made it into the literature as a case report.
If there is a case report I don't know about it. I won't look into it because this was my patient and this was a while ago.
I think you understood my point, however. This thing, no matter how unpleasant, happened. However, to put all logic and reason to one singular incidental case is, well, illogical and unreasonable.
Health care providers, in particular, should understand this; vaccines--both receiving them, and educating others about them--are fundamental to nursing.
Fundamental. This is not a gray area.
I looked up to see what the relationship was between transverse myelitis and the flu vaccine. There seems to be no proven link between transverse myelitis and the flu vaccine, but there is an increased incidence between transverse myelitis with the chicken pox vaccine and the rabies vaccine. Transverse Myelitis Fact Sheet: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)
There is at least one case where a person who had transverse myelitis and had had the flu shot was able to win a court case and received a significant payout.
This linked article will explain why you only have to prove a moderately strong causal relationship with vaccine and an injury, and the plaintiff is still able to be compensated for an assumed vaccine injury. Taking vaccine-related injuries to court (Online Only)
Interesting, do you have a good article on this or did they publish a case study on it? I would be interested in reading more about that reaction. The only serious side effects to a vaccine so far that I have seen is from the small pox vaccine, which I do not advocate getting for several reasons.
When I was a child and got the smallpox vaccine, I had an adverse reaction to it which, as my doctor explained, caused my body to "revaccinate" myself. Instead of just the one scab at the vaccination site, I developed scabs all over my body. I remember being miserable for a while, but I got over it eventually.

I personally do not support the smallpox vaccine. The smallpox vaccine is probably the "dirtiest" vaccine that we use. It contains many times more proteins than other vaccines and has a much higher side-effect ratio than any other vaccine that is commonly used in the United States.
My sister almost died from the smallpox vaccine, a close friend got myocarditis, and I got a deltoid that looked like someone had tried to implant a baseball under my skin. Approximately 1 in 1,000 people will have a serious side-effect from the smallpox vaccination and about 50 in 1,000,000 will have a life threatening reaction to the smallpox vaccine. CDC Smallpox | Side Effects of Smallpox Vaccination
When you compare this to the flu vaccine, which has a mild side-effect ratio of approximately 1-2% (runny nose, malaise etc.) and serious side-effects are less than 1 in 100,000 doses the differences are extremely large. Vaccines: Vac-Gen/Side Effects
IMHO it doesn't make much sense to have large scale smallpox vaccination program for disease that was eradicated in the 1970's on the off chance that someone will steal the last remaining smallpox samples and make a bioterrorism weapon.
Please explain how we don't have the autonomy to choose where to work? I think it's pretty reasonable to expect people working with high risk populations to get the flu shot. I kind of went into the field knowing this. Having said that, my current employer doesn't require flu shots (just PPD yearly). I got one anyway. I'm cautious like that.. I'd hate to make my dying patients any sicker than they already are, if I can help it.

I'm no study, but I'm 25 and I have all my documentation that I have gotten a flu shot every year since I was 8 (It's been earlier than that, but that's where I can find the beginning of my records). No adverse reaction for me and I have never had the flu. My mom asks me every fall if I've gotten my flu shot yet. Still going strong. I'm more concern getting in a horrible car accident than I am getting an adverse reaction to a vaccine. My job gives out free flu shots every year and I love it when coworkers say they never get the flu shot because the one year they have they got sick. Ummm hmmm. Also mention how you were already a bit sick before you got the shot.

You're right, you have a perfect right to feel however you choose to feel about the flu vaccine (regardless of the facts). And no one should be able to force the shot on you against your will. You have the right to choose not to work for healthcare employers that require or expect it of their employees. It's getting harder and harder to find employers that don't, but I'm sure there are still some out there.
