By a vote of 242-211, nurses at Flagstaff Medical Center have decided against becoming members of one of the country's fastest-growing nurses unions.
The secret-ballot election to join California Nurses Association was taken this week. About 90 percent of eligible nurses voted in it.

Wow ... it came down to 31 votes. I'm surprized it was that close since we are talking about Arizona.
However, I sometimes wonder if CNA is wasting their time in these anti-union states. Even if they manage win 51 percent of the vote some day, they're going to encounter a lot of opposition and difficulty with a bare majority.
Even in California, CNA doesn't tend to do that well with their contracts unless they have 65 percent or more of support from the RN's. Otherwise, management knows that the union has a lot of opposition, that a lot of RN's may cross during a strike if it comes to that, etc. which tends to weaken the union's negotiating power.
So ... you can easily end up with less than desirable contract, and then the opponents will always say: "See ... the union didn't do much for us!" Well ... that's going to happen when the union doesn't have strong majority support.
Maybe they're in it for the long haul ... but it's probably going to take unions decades to make any significant inroads in these anti-union states.

Victoryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Twice even.. OK one for me or maybe two:trout: :trout:
It's interesting. Since I'm from Az, and we don't have a lot of unions around here, I guess I'm a little naive about them.My mother is an RN in Hawaii-they are in a union. I don't hear anything bad about it. It has lots of benefits, especially pay. She NEVER misses a beak or lunch, and doesn't get abused. Everybody knows the rules and abides by them.
What are the cons to being in a union??? How can it hurt us nurses? How would it affect patients?
ST Francis hospital in HI is for sale and union.. All they need is the Pope's approval to sell. They have already sold some units off to non union employers.
Look at this JCAHO denial of accredidation!
This organization is not in full compliance with all applicable standards.
