Great website. Thanks spacenurse. It's kinda fun to look up different facilities to see what JCAHO thinks of them. :loveya:or :trout:
Yes. The list of Requirements for Improvement before Flagstaff Medical center can pass JCAHO is extensive and frightening.
I don't think I would want to work at a hospital that couldn't even pass the minimal standards of the JCAHO.
I don't know what but something must be seriously wrong there.
We may "need" a state union soon. The administrations and politicians are spreading the myth of a nursing shortage. The "myth" is used to justify short staffing and import large quantities of foreign nurses. By importing a large amount of foreign nurses we will lower nurse wages and import enough RN's to relieve this state of LPN's.There is nothing wrong with doing a good job and being paid well.
On a worse thought, I would not doubt that if the bird flu is real, it will bail out medicare, social security and "the nursing shortage" in short time.
:uhoh21: I am an australian nurse that is coming to the States (hopefully AZ) and your attitude to foreign nurses scares me. Am I going to be treated as an outcast due to the unrest amongst the nurses over there? I would hope not. We here in australia also have staffing problems which our hospitals see fit to recruit nurses from all over, from india in particular. I know there are other things the government could do to correct the problem, but even so i would never think of letting any of those nurses feel less welcome to my hospital. Nurses no matter where they are from need to unite and stick up for one another. Its hard enough doing our work without the lack of support from our co-workers dont you think?:blushkiss
This couldn't be more true! What can we do to unify nurses, without it having to be a union? How can we joing together to benefit us, patients, ratios...etc? Unions seems to be for the specific hospital or system. I'd sure like to see nurses be as powerful a voice as a tobacco lobbyist. But, we can't.....because we are unable to unify. The ANA is ineffective (so I'm told). All the other orginazions are too small. Who's looking out for all of us?????
Here in australia we have wonderful state unions, I believe that without them our pay would be low, and our pt/nurse ratios unreasonable. Our union has worked to get a reasonable pay, which we deserve as professionals, and have given us acceptable nurse patient ratios. We are not slaves and we need to have some of the pressure taken off as we deal in lives and when there is too much pressure mistakes are made. I love my job and would hate to consider another but love of the job doesnt pay the bills and neither does romantiscizing it. Sure i could work elsewhere and earn more but thanks to the union I dont have to because it is reasonable pay:):balloons:

A reliance on foreign labor in any field is not healthy for a nation. Another problem with immigrant citizens is the shuttling of money out of the United States. As an example, illegal immigration is one of Mexico's leading exports that bring money into their country.
I want immigrant nurses to have the same pay for the same work. Hopefully the nurses will welcome a life here in the United States, become stable members of a community and invest in the community around them rather than being an export product of a host country.

Excellent post.

Objection to a particular policy does not equate to treating foreign nurses poorly. That is like an American saying, "I won't travel to France - they hate Americans." Just because the French object to our politics, does not mean they hate Americans - nor does disliking the policy of importing nurses equate to entipathy towards those nurses. Relax, come, and enjoy the weather. Just don't expect a union contract to protect your rights...AZ is not that kind of state.

In AZ you'll have good pay without union dues. We also have a good State Board of Nursing. Your license will not be in jeopardy if you refuse overtime and nurse/patient ratios for ICU are 1:2. I work in PACU where the nurses have no more than 2 patients and only one if they are an ICU case. Post on this forum when you arrive and we'll give you information on good places to live, great restaurants, shopping, etc. Welcome in advance.
I would add that although unions may be more common in other nations, the United States remains a primarily captalistic society and even with our enormous public programs, such as welfare, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, we remain an independent, get it done, stand on your OWN TWO FEET, reward effort and SELF initiative kind of country. THANK GOD!!!!

Uhhhh...ok!
So then, where do we turn? If not unions, if not the ANA, then where?
I'm with you. And just because some people might have great wages, benefits, and 2:1 ratios, doesn't mean the rest of us do. I'm for a union, unless something better presents itself (and I can't see that in the near future). At least SOMEONE is trying to help! Union dues are cheap compared to the peace of mind it would bring me!!
