Specializes in NICU.

I got better benefits (like being paid on holidays even when you're NOT working that day) when I worked at Fry's Food and Drugstore (unionized by the UFCW), than I do now as a nurse :chuckle

Specializes in Med/Surg, Progressive Tele.

Depends on which hospital you work at. One a Holiday I get double time if I work that holiday, and if I don't work it, I get 8 hrs.. Not too shabby...

Lucky you. I've worked at 2 hospitals in the valley and both haven't paid for holidays if you don't work that day.

But I love where I work now, so I can't complain. I just thought it was ironic that I got paid for holidays while working at the grocery store, but I don't now while working as a nurse, lol.

Hi Everyone:

I don't get here as much as I like because I'm busy with my last semester in school and also doing an externship (puff puff).

I grew up in a Union state (NY). I can say there are good and bad unions alike and just like management, it depends who is running the entire ordeal. However, unlike poor management, you usually have fantastic benies and pay even if your union leaders aren't helping you much during a crisis on the floor.

Also, I have many friends and relatives who ARE professionals and are also represented by Unions. This idea of "blue color representation" was a compelling thought but after thinking it over, I realized that is simply the image Unions have carried for years because of their beginnings. I can't tell you how many "college educated professionals" I know that aren't union that upon finding out that the union secretaries are making as much or MORE are just horrified and disgusted. OUCH !!!

I think nursing is a fascinated combination of professional and blue color-skill worker. It is one of the reasons I chose the profession. I didn't want to be straddled to a desk all day long (as I had done as clerical staff for years) but I also wanted to use my intellect on the job.

I do feel that CNA is proving to be an excellent union in California and may act as a great footprint for other states looking to unionize. Also, I don't think that entire states need to unionize nursing - often it happens on a case by case basis (hospital being the case in this scenario).

I do hope that FMC goes up for another union vote and ends up union. If for no other reason but to show other hospital administrators within Arizona that they could be next and should improve the employees working conditions.

I do hear good things about Navapache hospital in Navajo County. I also hear good things about the hospital in Lake Havasu City and the one in Bullhead City. I DO NOT hear good things about the hospital in Kingman. However, there is room for improvement in all of these facilities which are not union.

In Arizona, nurses with a bachelor's degree or less must not be very happy. Look below at the list from the Arizona Board of Nursing and see how many have let their licenses slip. Almost 1/3 of RN are Inactive. WOW!
