First Year--Gain Weight or Lose Weight?

Published

I was at my yearly GYN exam last week and realized (hardly a shock, just in denial) that I have gained over 10 lbs since the start of nursing school. I have this huge fear that in my first year of nursing, I won't lose the weight and I'll gain even more.

So, my question is, in your first year, did you gain or lose weight (or stay the same)? Does anyone have any tips (besides staying away from the cookies in the break room) on trying to lose weight while under the stress of the first year?

Thanks!

I stayed about the same weight... but I'm more out of shape now. In school I usually had a class at the college gym, and it was a "walking campus" if you know what I mean, small town and I walked everywhere. Now living in a big city where I can't walk everywhere, cooking for myself and working nights, I'm at basically the same weight but I'm not near as healthy as I was- bad eating and less exercise beyond running around crazy at work. I'm trying to change before the habits get worse! :)

I gained 60 lbs during nursing school, sure I had a TVH/BSO a month before I started nursing school, so that probably helped too... I've been working for a month and I've dropped 10 lbs, and seem to be still loosing without any real effort. YEAH:roll

I lost about 20 pounds while in school balancing working 40 hours a week and going to school whick equaled school from 7:45-3:15 mon-friday and work from 4:00-midnight tuesday though friday and 11:00am-midnight on Saturday. This schedule left no time to sleep or eat. Now that school is out and my job shut down I have gained that back plus some. Hopefully when I find a full time nursing job it will start comming back off again.

I wish i had gained only 10....

I gained 15+ lbs in nursing school. I was so stressed all the time, I never wanted to exercise. Now that I'm working as a RN, though, I make sure to exercise on most (if not all) of my days off. I've realized how physically demanding working 12+ hours is, and I find that exercising actually helps me to handle it better. I don't exercise much, but it's enough to build my strength and stamina: 30 mins on the treadmill, moderate speed, increasing incline (to strengthen my thighs for all that walking I do!), and 3 different pilates exercises (back, arms, and legs) which help me maintain my posture (if nothing else!) during those long shifts.

Good luck on finding something that works for you!

Almost a year in nursing and I have stayed the same - I take the stairs up to my floor each day....over 200...but hey, I might as well......keeps me in shape, and now I often can beat those who wait for the elevator.:wink2:

I gained 20 lbs during nursing school. I've lost 20 in the last 10 months since I started working. No extra exercise or anything. It wasn't that hard, I just avoided the greasy cafeteria/fast food and packed healthy lunches for myself instead of microwave dinners.

I gained 15 lbs in nursing school. I went from being a healthy, thin girl to a bloated, chunky girl. I haven't started working yet (not getting started on that here) and am stressed out by that and a iminent divorce, so I've put on 5 lbs since my Dec graduation.

I sure hope I lose it when I start working! One thing I hate the most about my weight gain? My thighs rub together now, causing shorts to ride up in between my legs. I'm avoiding shorts unless they come almost to my knees. I sure hope this is temporary!

lost weight. i work nights which makes me ultra paranoid about eating during the day cause i'm never sure about what i'll eat at night! :p i bring stuff like:

- fiber one with cut up strawberries and yogurt (the strawberry fibre one is amazing!

- i keep raw almonds in my locker along with dried fruit

- a bag of edamame in always nice

- slimfast optima

- oatmeal

- string cheese

- fruit

etc, etc, etc

I gained 10lbs also. I did fine from Jan 07 until Sept 07 then I moved in with my boyfriend. I would come home from class 9-4:30 then relax awhile then jump on my motorized treadmill for a 30 min workout. And I did watch what I eat. Cottage cheese/yoplait light yogurt etc. And salmon and mixed vegies...and chicken...but when i moved in with him it all went down hill from there. Now I have passed the nclex...and hopefully landed a job...and I have been back on my treadmill and working out more..trying to loose the 10lbs so I can fit back into my summer clothes....I hate to shop!!! But sitting in class...turned my muscle to mush...just what I was afraid of.
