fired... where can a bad nurse go to find a job?

Just got fired. Right now I just want to quit nursing and get a job waitressing, but that might not be practical for my family.

So, where do I go. I'm a crappy nurse. I've been a nurse for eight years and have never been good at it. Should I go back to psych?

This is a completely serious post. :crying2:

It's beyond me why anyone who is really bad at a job, would want to continue doing it. The money aside. The security aside. Nursing is just not one of those jobs you can do and just wing it.

I have my doubts as to whether this is a serious post. The disclaimer is kind of a clue.

No, it is very serious. See, this is why I don't post here anymore; because there are so many trolls that it is hard to weed out the serious posts. I've been a member of this site since 2003.

I got fired for obtaining a critical value at 4 am and not reporting it until 6:30. I was already on my DON's _hit list. I know what I did was wrong.

I've been a nurse eight years and have had five jobs. The last two, and the first job were write-up city for me. The second two jobs went, eh, okay, but I had my reason for leaving them.

I'm ready to quit nursing. It has not been a good field for me. I'm my family's breadwinner. I don't see good times ahead for the four of us. :crying2:

If you are not sufficient as a nurse and are not interested in improving, you can always quit and find another job, not career but job I mean. Waitressing sounds less stressful. I'd go with it.

Have you tried something with a slower pace like a doctor's office or reviewing medical records? They may not pay you what you make now but surely better than waitressing.

Two hospitals in a metro close to me have in-house programs to train coders. Look for something to build on your knowledge and experience. So you aren't cut out to be a hospital nurse, maybe you can find another path.

Good luck!

Waitresses make pretty good money at upscale restaurants.

nursing isn't for everyone. at least you are saying you are a "bad nurse". why do you think you are a bad nurse? do you lack certain skills? im also a little curious as to why you didn't report a critical lab for over an hour. if nursing isn't for you, please get out of it. although you may be the "bread winner", your family is going to be hurting when one day you get sued.

this...is what i was going to post.

why do you think you're a bad nurse?

and why didn't you report a critical value stat?

your self-esteem seems to be in the toilet, and i find that sad.

do you like nursing at all?

if you really don't, then yeah, take a waitressing job or something that pays the bills.

but if you do like nursing but lack confidence, it's time for a bit of contemplation re why/where you go wrong, and focus on correcting it.

don't give up yet...rather, time to give yourself a kick in the pants then pick yourself up.

it's all up to you....yes, it really is.

if you want to, you can do this.

i truly hope you see a light.

i agree with above post, you need to figure out why you are a bad nurse, surely this is something you can correct on your own. litsen, you went through alot of training, passed nclex and have spent time in the trenches as a nurse. after 8 yrs you should be well on your way of finding niche in nursing, not second guessing yourself. i suggest getting away from pt care for awhile and do some non-hands on nursing jobs. but you really need to take a look at yourself and decide if you are a safe and practicle nurse or not, and correct the failures you have or move on. good luck.

Keep in mind that there is more to nursing than bedside care. You can be the nurse that works for insurance companies that answers basic questions and refers care. It seems that it would be a more stable type nursing for you without the bedside stress. Also, you can look into school nursing. You still see people and give care, but 99.99% is non acute.

I'm just stupid. I mean, that is the bottom line. I'm stupid. I don't know why I screw up.

I'd just as soon get out of nursing at this point, but I don't know how my family will stay afloat.
