Specialties School

Today we had a fire drill everything was going fine till a 7th grade boy went into cardiac arrest out of the blue, no warning just heart stopped. He is doing fine i got his heart back to a normal rhythm thanks to my AED before EMS got to the school:)

Any of you have fire drill nightmares?

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Yes! mom forgot tell us when he moved into the school in November, her son has been well managed on meds. But for some reason he has not been taking his meds, but we have a meeting set up once he comes back to school.

Specializes in hospice.

Uh, sounds like medical neglect to me. Is CPS involved?

Wow! Well done!

No it's not medical neglect the mom is doing everything right! the boy chose not to take his meds, so now we have to come up with a plan to help him hopefully this will wake him up and now he will take his meds.

Specializes in family practice and school nursing.

Wow! Thank goodness you were there and able to help that boy! Awesome job! I can't believe he hadn't taken his med for so long... a meeting is a great idea... hopefully he learned his lesson and that not taking his meds is NOT a choice.

No firedrill stories like that to share... We just have many kids with autism and the fire alarm can really set some of them off. They get really upset and violent at times...

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

Awesome job, Nurse!! :nurse: I second Esme12's suggestion of a bubble bath and wine.

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

Wow! so scary! great job by you though! And a great reminder to parents that they need to be on the ball and not take their children's conditions for granted - no matter how stable they may seem to be. Tell the school. An ounce of knowledge goes a very long way!

Specializes in Geriatrics, Dialysis.

Nothing like a teenage boy for stubbornness! Hopefully he learned his lesson and will be compliant with his meds going forward. Good thing you were there and thank God he is ok! Cripes, you must have been terrified though.

Specializes in Inpatient psych, LTC.

OMG that is awful!!! Thank goodness he is ok.

Specializes in ED, School Nurse.

Wow! Kudos to you!! Thank goodness he is OK!!!

I always worry about medical histories that don't get disclosed to me for whatever reason. Like parents who check "no medical hx" but then list 14 different medications their kids are on. Drives me crazy.

Wow! Great job! Thankfully I have never had a fire drill that exciting! Glad he is ok.
