Am I the only one who ABSOLUTELY hates field trips? I know it is part of the job and I am very blessed to have this job. I have worked Med-Surg for the last 6 years so I have missed most of my son's holidays.
But...come on! We go on so many field trips at my school. I have to attend when my diabetic student attends. I have been on 5 already this year and I have 3 this week.
i have to set up coverage for field trips. It irritates me because i am the only department so to speak that has to find their own coverage. The teachers that serve as chaperons just say that they are going and wipe their hands of it. I don't even go on most of them and i have to find warm bodies with nursing degrees to go on all these trips. I currently have 7 that i am working on
This!
Most of us have to find our own subs too if we ever, God forbid, need a day off. No one else has to do that.
I don't like my sub. She was checking for lice, because I wasn't there and she said she found one with lice, and comes to know that the kid never had lice. Then she came here when I was checking for lice and I took her word that someone had lice, the kid didn't. Then one kid she checked, said didn't have lice, did have lice. I asked her how she checks for lice and she just checks the neck.
I dont get to go on the FT, no nurse goes unless there is a diabetic, and then a sub nurse goes. I just tell NSG admin and they set it up. I dont really care one way or the other, as we are in inner city school and only go to local places, so really it is the same thing over and over again.
Where I am, (I have the role of Care Assistant) all the staff in the house are trained in basic first aid and medication administration. For my residential house, we need additional Midazolam trainin.
The nurses can't come on the field trips as they need to remain in the medical center in case of an emergency on site
We don't go on many (I think each grade does 1 big one a year and the 4th and 5th graders go on 2 a year) That being said I only have to go if one of my diabetic students parents cannot attend (and I only have one student where his mom has trouble getting off work for field trips--I got to go on one in September which was a lot of fun and I think I'll get to go to the amusement park in May too!). That being said if I were going on a lot of them I dont think I'd enjoy it as much just because its a day out of my office not getting other things done!

Fortunately I don't have to go. I just pack the emergency meds for the food allergy and asthma kiddos. My diabetics have a parent chaperone.
