feeling like there's a lump in my troat

Published

For about 4 or 5 days now I get this sensation like a pill is loged in my throat, like I swallowed it, but it didn't go down. It doesn't hurt, but is quite anoying. By night time I feel like I'm going to go mad. Has anyone heard of what this might be? Or how to stop it? Also I just started taking Zoloft. Could this cause it?

is that the great educator in you talking?

Yep; you've now been taught to fish!

Zach--the pain was intense, substernal agony. I was literally writhing in pain. It radiated to my back. Of course, with any chest pain they work you up to r/o an MI. My GERD was so severe that antacids didn't help at all. They gave me all sorts of antacids/lidocaine, and did an ECG and chest x-ray. They finally gave me a shot of demerol and sent me home.

The funny thing is, on all my clinical rotations it seems that almost every patient is on Protonix or some other PPI, and yet the ED docs didn't give me any. They just referred me to a GI doc.

Was your pain relieved by antacids or an H2 blocker?

I decided to skip my morning coffee to see if that helps, and it did, until I ate an apple. I guess the acid was to much.

I would see a doctor just to make sure, but I have had that about 3 times in my life during times of a lot of anxiety...not so much huge stress times but when I was chronically anxious for awhile about something...like starting a new job, etc...went away when the anxiety left..thankfully.

it would be helpful if you elaborated on what that was randy.

globus hystericus is a psychosomatic disorder which is characterized by a chronic lump (thus, globus) in one's throat r/t acute anxiety, but is not true dysphagia.

it is commonly known to be a sequelae of an anxiety disorder and is manifested by what you are describing.

if your anxieties are prominent, you might want to see a psychologist.

good luck.

Does Randy mean that we (global) are becoming hysterical (hystericus) for nothing! If so, he's a riot!:rotfl: Seriously though, definitely get that checked out. It could be something serious such as cancer. Let us know what you find out.

I don't remember if I actually tried antacids...I must have but I don't think they helped. It just went away eventually.

I agree I see protonix given to almost EVERY patient. Sometimes I think they overprescribe it but maybe it's a good thing.

If it ever happens again, I will see a doc.

Apples are bad news for me, too.

BTW if you do have GERD, there's a great product that you can put in coffee to decrease the acids. PM me if you want more info--don't want to be seen as pushing a product here.

Well, my family has a lot of hypothyroidism in it. Talk to your doctor about whether this could be an issue as it seems to be just one of the "symptoms" that people in my family have had. Good luck to you!

Rica, I experienced the same sensation while taking Zoloft. I did not realize the connection until I ran out of medicine, went through the horrible withdrawl, and then was relieved when the lump went away.

I have been going through the same thing for the last month or two. I was actually starting to worry that I had a tumor, or something! I started to take a combination of pepcid and zantac, and feel 100%! If I don't take them, the same old feeling is back. I guess I now have gerd...... :o
