FCCJ Fall '09???

Published

Anyone else planning on applying to FCCJ's nursing program for Fall '09? I figured we might as well start a "support group" thread of sorts for those of us who are. Never too early to start, right?

OK Guys and Gals, you all were really freaking me out and I was thinking I am good with everything coming in with my points at 208.92. All this discussion with counties was what I was starting to get concerned about so I went to my application packet and looked it up. I have read it over like five times so I wasn't sure what you all were going on about. So here it is word for word and quoted in the hopes that it will ease everyone's minds.

"Priority will be given to qualified applicants (Florida Residents) living in the program service district, which includes Duval, Baker, Clay, and Nassau counties. Qualified applicants will be selected for admission from a rank ordered list. If all qualified service district applicants have been selected for admission and there are additional openings to be filled, other Florida applicants will be rank ordered and the remaining selections made in the same manner. After all qualified Florida applicants have been selected, positions remaining open will be filled with qualified out-of-state applicants, using the same rank order process."

It is under the Admission Requirements and I am taking rank ordered to mean our points. So first we are placed in the county pile and then sorted by rank (points) and then all other counties are put in a pile and they are ranked. So for anyone not in these four counties there is a need for concern. Then out-of-staters are in a pile and they are ranked. So there you have it. Hope that helps ease some stress and lets keep waiting!! lol

Since my application didn't say Baker or Clay counties, I called and spoke with the Dean. Yup! Sure enough, he said that quote "a selet seats are reserved for out of county students". He said about 10% to be exact. So, Im assuming that this is new! Good luck to all of you out of the county!

OK so now I am worried that I won't get in since I am in Clay. I am planning my whole world around getting in this Fall. As an older student changing careers, I can't afford to play the wait game. Anyone know of a good RN program other than the community colleges in the area? I am really upset about this. I figured I had a good point score with 208 but now I am not so sure if I am going to be stuck in that 10% by county. I am panicking. Anybody have any suggestions?

I think you should be okay with that many points. I didn't think to ask any more questions. Just keep everything crossed that you will get in. I think this whole 10% thing is new this fall. Because on my application (I kept copies of everything), it says clearly that priority will be given to Duval and Nassau counties. NOTHING about 10% of anything!!! Guess with everyone questioning it, they are directing all questions to the Dean (that's what "Angie" told me when I called this afternoon). Guess, if one individual is answering all the questions, we get ONE answer, LOL!

As for other programs, I'm not too sure. I was hoping to get into FCCJ for the fall or spring. However with all the people coming back to school, it's much harder because they all have experience and get sooooo many points!!! I was going to try SJRCC, but, they changed their point system effective fall 2009 also! So, it's going to be harder there as well!

Well, I'm just putting my faith in God's hands and letting what happens, happen! Good luck to you!

I really think with 200+ points you will get in. I have 205 points and I am not really panicking. Of course, I am not much of a panicker anyway ;). I heard UNF has a good program, but it is very competitive, moreso than FCCJ. They do not go by points. They go by GPA and then they call qualified people back for interviews. I think the girl I talked to about it said they only let like 45 students in per semester!

Thanks for the encouragement from you both. I can only wait and see like all the rest. Then I will figure out what I need to do to get more points if I can for Spring if I don't get in this time. :banghead:

I asked ******** about the application that included Baker and Clay county because my friend got that application at orientation yesterday. I thought that maybe this was a new change because mine only said Nassau/Duval, but she informed me that that was the OLD application. The college really needs to be careful of the information they're giving out. I didn't even find out about the county preference until after I applied and it has been very stressful trying to get the correct information. I hope I am one of those 10% out of county acceptees. Good Luck to you CW too, I know how you feel being a fellow Clay county resident. If I can't get into FCCJ then I'm going to apply to UNF and JU, I've heard they have good programs, but they are still very competitive (at least they don't have county preference). I sure do hope those letters come soon!

Just wanted to say hi to Twins1995 ;)

...and say I cant wait until I get my acceptance/denial letter within the next couple of weeks!!! I applied early with 186pts for Fall and am currently taking Micro. I've decided I'm not going to get upset if I don't make it for Fall b/c I'll definitely be in for Spring. Even if I get a "C" in Micro (doubtful considering I've had straight A's throughout pre-reqs. basic math killed me on the NAT) I'll be applying with 194pts. Plus we're expectinbg our first child 12/12/09 so I'm not going to stress myself out over it anymore ;)

Goodluck Everyone!!!!

Yeah, I think it is rotten that there is a preference. If it is because they are thinking of travel time for students and want to select from counties that are closer to the campus, I find that unfair. As an adult pushing 40, I think it should be the individuals responsibility to get themselves there on time. After all we are paying for it and we want it as a career. I can see out-of-state students being put as last but not people residing in the surrounding Jacksonville area. It should be completely point/rank ordered. Just my opinion. :) Like I said I can't obsess about it or I'll go crazy! I have a Plan B in case I don't get in. Unfortunately it pushes my long term plans out another semester. Good Luck to all trying to get in! Oh, does anyone know how many seats they are filling for the Fall? I know it is the largest class to be filled each year but don't know if the 196 seats is the correct number.

I am by no means agreeing with the county preference, but I think I know what they are thinking. Clay, St. John's, and Putnam county has a community college (SJRCC) that offers their own nursing program. Duval and Nassau are served by FCCJ. I am not sure, but I bet SJRCC has a county preference too with Clay, St. Johns, and Putnam getting first seats. UNF on the other hand is the only Uiversity serving all the counties in NE florida, which is why they don't have a county preference.

I hope we get out letters today. I have a good feeling about it. For those of you who do get an acceptance letter, please let us know how many points you applied with. Thanks. Good luck to you all!
