Hi nurses
Recently i failed a pre-employment drug screen because I smoked some weed a few weeks earlier... now I have to meet with the board... has anybody ever had to go thru this in Michigan... whats going to happen next?

Nope never had to go through that, but I will say that I wouldn't want a nurse who smokes weed to take care of any of my family members.

What were you thinking? Wow.
I might look into a voluntary rehab BEFORE you go to the board.
...unless of course you just wanted to study nursing and don't care about a license.
(Michigan has so many other jobs too, right? NOT!)
Good luck

Yup, lesson learned. If MJ is that important to you then I would probably consider another career option.
No sympathy here.
PS: Does anyone find it odd that this would be reportable on a PRE-EMPLOYMENT drug screen?
The OP wasn't even employeed yet.

Because the previous responses have been so helpful, I'll add my own.
You might want to search the "nurses in recovery" forum if you're looking for online help. I realize that you haven't made any statements about an addiction or whatever, but the forum might be helpful for anecdotal procedural information.

Well, you mostly likely won't be hired. I don't know what happens after that. Do you plan to smoke weed or anything like that? If so, nursing is not for you.

I almost gave you Kudos because you were so honest:chair:! But then I wouldn't want people to think I was condoning it because I certainly do NOT. Meeting with the board is serious business.
I don't have any experience with your situation but I wish you the best and hope you won't have this happen again.
First impressions are everything and this pre-employment screening issue would not be a way you would want to represent yourself or the profession.

Right. It seems odd that a pre employement drug screen gets reported to the BON. OP were you already on BON discipline. Or are you already in a diversion drug program when you relapsed. No sympathy. I think the BON is WAAY too easy on addiction. They get out of diversion and get a clean record only to divert or smoke weed again, again and again.

Well, If you are an RN I'm surprised that you jumped right into that hole. You know about all that stuff from just getting tested even for nursing college entrance. Surely even though this might have been for your first job out of school, you'd know you would be tested for each and every nursing job till you die and some places test you once and even twice a year once you got the job.

Sorry if I'm not "helpful" or as much of a bleeding heart as some would like but I do not buy it.
Seriously, be honest. You have a clean license and no previous sanctions, failed a pre-employment drug screen where YOU ARE NOT employed and now you have to meet with the Board of Nursing? Why would some place who does not know you report a pre employment drug screen to the bon?
thanks to all the non-judgemental replies... to all the others get bent... and no im not addicted... and in another 20yrs all of this wont matter... weed will be legal by then... we just have to wait on a few more old conservatives to die off
