excelsior graduates

Published

I am new to this site and I am tring to find out if there are any Excelsior college graduates that can give me some information about the program based on their experience.

I too am an Excelsior grad and felt the testing clinical are appropriate for the type of program it is. They ensure you pay attention to detail and yes, it was stressful but a necessary part of their program to ensure good, quality RN's. But then again I was an LVN and a paramedic and did home births for years before becoming an RN. The testing clinical took an incredible amount of prep and memorization but I passed first time around.

After I finished the testing clinical the RN said to me that they were not supposed to comment on students skills but she could always tell someone who works in a hospital alongside RN's because I knew what I was doing....I let her know I hadn't worked in a hospital in 13 years!!! LOL!

I was glad the Excelsior option was available and it was perfect for me. Too bad California and other states have put restrictions or refused to license Excelsior grads. Another example of nurses shooting themselves in the foot!

As another member said on a different post, nurses never seem to miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

To to the OP, welcome to allnurses. I'm an old school Excelsior graduate--back when the school was known as Regents College. To this day, that is my only gripe with the school--that is they changed the name.

Gee....I'm not the only one who can't stand that name? It makes me think of cheap liquor at a very cheap saloon with ladies of the night available upstairs. Just how one wants to see their educational institution.

Excelsior is the NYS motto.

New York could do better for a motto.

You tell whoever legislates these things. Me, I don't care. ;)

I'd have to consult with the Donald on a suggestion.

I think of the South Park episode where Al Gore keeps yelling, "Excelsior!" I think it's the one about the ManBearPig. I don't care for the name of the college either.

I understand why it could be reasoned the clinicals needed to be as difficult as they are for credibility purposes, but truthfully, it did not make me a better nurse. In fact, I felt like it took ten years off my life. When they handed me the congratulations sheet, I was just numb.

I went into this test as an LPN with 19 years experience. I studied/memorized/counted apical pulses on my cat/watered my plants via IV drip rates/played IV push in the sink (my 7th grader did a lot of this with me and we competed against each other :)) I did this stuff for months and months. I am very difficult to "rattle", but caught a darn cold 3 days before the test. Overdosed my self on cough syrup to keep from letting on how sick I was. The cough syrup overdose then caused diarrhea! By this time, my nerves were completely SHOT! But, I went very well prepared and all that kicked in. I passed first try and felt numb just like you. Then cried all the way home on my 3 hour drive.

Yep, it was rough.. but I have never regretted it and I still think it was a fair test. I am a better nurse because of the whole process.

Thank you all for your post regarding the Excelsior clinical test. I have been trying to figure out what to do? I know many great nurses who failed that test, So I havent enrolled in the program. Then theres the San Angelo option ( I live in Texas), but I think you have to go through TCN to do that program. I talked to someone from the College Network and he told me that Excelsior is not Texas accrediated just recognized. Then I hear about hospitails not hiring Excelsior graduates. Then I have heard Texas BON is going to stop accepting the Excelsior grads.

My head is spinning????

I live close to San Angelo Texas. Someone else that I work with went through this program and is currently working as an RN without any problems. TCN is just a middle man that is not needed. You can purchase their modules off of EBAY. I live 15 min. from San Angelo. You? Anyway...As far as I know Texas is still okay. Good Luck to you. Traci
