Hello all, I'm attending Saint Louis Community College and I have an option to take College Comp II or a Literature elective. (ex. American lit, Introduction to Fiction, Women in Lit.). In your opinion, do you think a literature class would be more interesting than College Comp? I'm not very good at College Comp, so I would like to take a more interesting class. Do any of you think a literature class would be a harder course than College Comp? I don't want a class that would be too stressful, either. I don't know much about literature, so I would like your help. Thanks.

You might enjoy a Lit class, but please look into it before you sign up. Some of those classes have a lot of paper-writing involved.

At the university I attended before going to nursing school, they offered Literature for Children, which involved readings from authors like Dr Seuss. One of my friends was shocked to learn (the hard way) that it turned out to be one of the hardest courses offered by the department.
I'd see if you can talk to an advisor or some other students about your options if you're worried about the difficulty level. If you're wanting the scoop on a particular prof, you might check out www.ratemyprofessors.com . You have to take things like this with a grain of salt, but it's one way of getting some opinions before you dive into a class head-first.

Lit classes have heavy reading and writing reqs (I used to be an English major and have taken 18 credit hours of upper level lit classes under my belt).
IMHO, If you have trouble in comp class, I would advise taking Comp II and working on that weakness. You will need those skills. GL!

Great suggestion! I would also suggest that if you are planning to transfer to a university that you check to see if you will need Comp II. It may be a requirement.

I have taken both and loved my american lit 2 class.. it was awsome but some of that could have been the teacher. Both are writing intense but I had way ....way more indepth writing in my comp 2 class. I took my comp 2 during a regular semester and it took every min of my life (got a mid B)but I took american lit 2 during a mini mester (3 weeks long) and got a 99 average. It all depends on you I think as well. Good luck to you...
Thanks for your advice. I will take all of your suggestions into consideration. They are all good advice.

For my undergrad, everyone had to take "technical writing" but in tiny letters on the bottom of our degree plan it gave some alternatives so while all my friends suffered through technical writing - I took poetry and it was awesome!

If you plan on getting a BSN or MSN you will want to check with a University and make sure that your English class choice will fulfill your graduation requirements. Some Universities require English Comp I & II. I have the same option at my school but the catch is that most of our local universities won't transfer my English if I don't have both I & II.
