I am a new RN so of course that means I will be a "NOC'er". I did NOCs during a extra curricular preceptorship so I already know how hard it is for me to sleep in the day time. What do you use to keep your room dark in the daytime? Has anyone used Eclipse Black Out Curtains? The video on the Bed Bath and Beyond website seems pretty convincing but they do not show what it looks like in a room with the lights off and the curtains drawn. I need something as dark as they make them!

I have not heard of the Eclipes brand, but I bought some dark suede blackout curtains at JcPenney. Not only do they keep the light out, they also helps with noise. My room is almost pitch black when the sun is out. They weren't cheap, but they were worth every penny!
Best to you, I've been on nocs for 3 months and still trying to adjust. I'm hoping it gets easier.

a solid white carboard box cut to fit the window works great and doesn't look bad from outside (like aluminun foil). even blackout shades and curtains let light in at the top and around the edges, i like it pitch black!

I have those--it's not really pitch black, but pretty dark nonetheless
I dont really have issues sleeping in light areas, however, so I'm not so sure about the affect...we just bought them to keep the room cooler
Its definitely much darker than regular curtains and they look nice too.
Oh yeah, and I use cardboard too and then cover it with blinds in the living room. Still not pitch black...but pretty good...and I agree, it's way better than foil

What does NOC stand for? I only know it to mean Nursing Outcomes....
Sorry for my ignorance!

I just finished a 6-week externship and worked a lot of nights and I used foil -- just like Elvis! It did look ridiculous from the outside, but that room was pitch black and I would be utterly discombobulated when I would get up and go out into the hallway and see the bright afternoon sunshine.
Good luck with your nocs. I enjoyed night shift a lot but it made the rest of my life a little challenging.

I have those curtains in my bedroom, and I think they work pretty well. The fabric doesn't block out 100% of the light, but it comes close enough for me. I used to tape the sides of the curtain to the wall because light could get through on the sides, but I don't bother anymore.
Those curtains, earplugs, and melatonin were what finally helped my daytime insomnia. Also, the curtains don't look as tacky as many other blackout curtains I've seen, and they keep my room cooler in summer.

I worked the overnight shift for many years prior to working where I do now, and what worked best for me was installing a light-blocking pull-down shade in your bedroom. A regular shade will not work because the light actually goes through a regular one. They are rated as to their light-blocking ability, and can be found in any store that sells a wide selection of window treatments such as curtains, drapes, blinds, etc.
My bedroom was always as dark as could be, even in the middle of a bright sunny day, when the shade was drawn down. And my bedroom then had a rather large window too. The nice thing about using a light-blocking shade is that you can put any kind of curtains, drapes, etc. over that to hide the shade and make your bedroom look more decorative.

I think I have them. I got mine on clearance at Lowes. I spent $60 but now instead of sleeping 4 hr, I sleep 5-6 along with 1 tylenol PM. They are great! I was off this weekend and slept to 11am this morning. I try not to pull them together on the weekend because it tricks me into sleeping really late. Try them and keep the reciept. You can take them back if they don't work.

I got curtains online from JC Penny's that worked great. The ones I got from Bed Bath and Beyond (yes, Eclipse, I just checked) did NOT block all the light. The ones from Pennys do, except for a rim of light at the top where the curtain rod is. I solved that by having pull down shades inside the window frame. I like my bedroom totally black.
