EBP Topic Ideas

Published

Hi Everyone!! :D

For my nursing research class we are having to choose a topic for an evidence based practice (EBP) research paper..making up a PICO question etc..the topic has to involve an action that us as the nurse does (not a practice for doctors, pharmacists, etc). As nursing students we are not fully aware of all the issues/controversies/interventions lacking adequate research that currently occur in the field.

What are some of the hot topics??

We've thought about for example IM injections (whether to aspirate or not), and support for the "golden hour" in OB..

Any other ideas that we can find an adequate amount of research articles on?? Please and thank you!!

I have to write an evidence based paper about diabetes for my nursing program and I am confused on what it is.

Can I write something such as Glycosylated hemoglobin test? Is that an evidence based practice?

Thank you for your help in advance!

In an evidence based paper, you are incorporating patient-based clinical research papers to state your finding and results.

What is that test for?

Is it the best test for that purpose and why?

I don't know is it? That is a great topic! Introduce your topic, why is there a need to know about your topic, why is it important to nursing?

Come up with a thesis, by choosing why there is a need to solve this problem you found related to your topic. What about that test do you want to prove/disprove with use of literature to substantiate your thesis.

Write 3-5 topic sentences that relate to the thesis. This is based upon one research study. Do this with research integration to substantiate your topic sentences, thus turning them into paragraphs.

Use several research integrations in order to answer your thesis, don't forget formatting.

your instructor has given you the rules to follow (hopefully) follow it precisely.

Do not wait until the last minute.

If you are not passionate about the topic or find lack of data to find a question you want to find an answer to then move on.

Think about clinicals, was there ever a time where you questioned why something was done and thought it could be done differently in regards to your topic?

remember your paper does not have to disprove something.

My paper 10 years ago proved that current practice was the best practice, even when nurses didn't accept it.

Good luck.

Thank you that helps a lot!:) I am just still a little confused about how to use evidence based practice with the topic of diabetes.. I just don't fully understand what evidence based practice is exactly with diabetes ? I found an article that is called "Empowering Staff Nurses as Primary Educators for Patients with Type 1 Diabetes"... Is that evidence based practice ? Using nurses as educators ? Or is evidence based practice meaning more like how we diagnose the disease and what treatment is used? Sorry I don't know why I'm so confused on it! haha but thank you!!

I have to write an evidence based paper on the topic of diabetes for one of my classes. I tried looking for something on this all day, but I am confused. What is an evidence based practice done with diabetes? Does this just mean like diagnosis tools that are used in health care? Or education that is done with patient through nurses? I am just confused and haven't been able to find very much.

Thanks in advance!

Explain to us what "evidence-based practice" means. Let's start there.

I have to agree...what is your understanding of Evidence Based Practice. I am sure there must have been SOMETHING covered in your class about this otherwise you would not have this assignment.

I suggest you seek clarity from your professor or reread the assignment outline

One way of describing EBP is bridging research and scientific findings into direct patient care. It sounds like your assignment is to investigate a specific part of diabetes mellitus such as medications, education, diet, foot care, etc. Take the information that you have found in research and identify how you can use it in caring for a client to provide the best care for the client.

An excellent source is pubmed.gov put in "evidenced based practice AND diabetes mellitus AND nursing" you will get about 300 different articles related to nursing and diabetes to help with your project. I hope this is helpful.

I am currently taking a class in this and have to develop a paper to examine how EBP is used to address the specific problem.

You first need to find a problem you want to research; Prevention of pressure ulcers. AMA discharges, improving vaccination rates etc... Then develop a PICOT question. The picot identifies the problem and population. the proposed intervention, what are you using for comparison. what outcome you hope to see over what time frame.

Example: Euthanasia rates among dogs voluntarily surrendered to animal control approximately 25% are euthanized. I proposed to examine the research to see if increased education with regard to spay and neuter programs will reduce the incidence id euthanasia in animal control shelters. I will use as comparison statistics on the number of animals euthanized vs the number of animals adopted over a 6 month period.

From your PICOT statement you develop search strings. such as Euthanasia rate: Prevention: education

Plug these into your search engine and go.

If you school has online research engines use those - if not try google scholar as it has scholarly resources rather than wading through E-MED and WEBMD.

Hope this helps
