Duke ABSN Fall 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello! I figured it was time to start this thread now that the application deadline is nearly here. Let us commence the stress and commiseration!

I finally submitted my Duke ABSN application yesterday after being away from my computer for months while traveling. I feel excited and hopeful, but the reality is that I won't be able to attend without a significant scholarship. I love Duke's program and my partner lives outside of Durham (I'm currently near Tucson, AZ) so this could be the perfect fit.

Nursing will be a second career for me--I'm 34. I'm curious whether most of my fellow applicants are younger or around my age?

Good luck everyone!

Replying to @garssta: Only applied to Duke ?

-3.75 GPA B.S. Biology, Chemistry minor/1 publication (MRI research)/1 acknowledgment mention (diabetes/cancer/lifespan research)
-Internship: St. Jude Children's Research hospital (influenza vaccine paper in progress)
-All pre-reqs & optional courses completed, but most are B's
- Volunteer: Veteran hospital PACU (95 hours)
-AmeriCorps service (1 year)/Boys & Girls Club: Group Leader & Swim Coach (3 years)
-CNA nursing home experience (6 months inner-Kansas City)
- U.S. Forestry: Built houses and fought wildfires for a year

I'm 24, currently a patient care assistant at Mayo Clinic. The HEA II interview went well, but it really depends on Duke's mid-march financial aid package estimate.

what is the HEA II?

@seacandace : Health Equity Academy

So I applied to Duke, Case Western Reserve, UMass Amherst ( I won't be attending as they make you drive up to 60 miles for clinicals...no thanks), and to George Washington University. I have already had an interview for Case last week and that went really well.

I have a 3.6 for my BA in Theatre Performance, a 3.5 for my MA which I received from The Shakespeare Institute in England and a 4.0 for all my pre-reqs which I took via GW and Johns Hopkins.

I've lived abroad several times and have taught college locally. Performed in many countries and places here in the USA as a professional actor. I volunteered working with adults and children with special needs and volunteered at my hospital which then hired me on as a Unit Secretary on a Med/Surg/Ortho floor.

Compared to all of you I don't think my grades are good enough! HAHA. I'm hoping my age/life experience plus my varied background is useful.

I havent been accepted anywhere yet...all the deadlines are March 1, though GWU said they would let us know the end of February. I am literally SO nervous. I actually took off work March 1 so I could be by my computer.

I thought we find out mid-march?

I cant remember where I read it but March 1 is when everyone finds out. I looked at prior years for Fall and most everyone was notified by then. Mid-March is for financial aid? I know Duke Days is usually mid to the end of March for accepted and waitlisted students.

I emailed them last week and they said we will know by March 1st. Since March 1st is a Saturday, and I highly doubt anyone will be working in the office that day, that decisions will be posted on next Friday (Feb 28th.) But who knows...

Even if you don't get in March 1st, know that after March 20th or so, a lot of people may decline due to financial restraints i.e. mid-March aid not being as much as anticipated.

I'm so nervous!

UGH you guys, I got into all my schools so far and I NEED Duke to tell me so I can make a CHOICE! I am SO appreciative that i've been accepted to a place but MAN. It's a toss-up between GWU and DUke. I got accepted to Case Western's Grad Entry program with some scholarship money but it's STILL pricey and I want to pursue a APRN in future...One more week!

Application status has been updated to "Under Committee Review"... Chugging along here!

Have others heard of Watts College of Nursing (https://www.wattsschoolofnursing.org/)? If you really want to live in the Durham area (like I do!) and don't have in-state residency, you might want to check it out. I'm also applying there. It's private, so it isn't cheap (~$40K for a two-year BSN), but I have a friend who went there who really loved it. It's the oldest nursing school in NC and has direct ties to the Duke Health system.

Watts has a rolling deadline, and the tiered application process is a little different than most other schools, but it seems like a good option if Duke doesn't work out. I'm a little unclear about their accreditation as they recently switched from a diploma program to a BSN program. The diploma program was ACEN-accredited.

@seacandace my application also says under committee review! AHH. This last week will be killer! I of COURSE am at work for a full 12 at the hospital on Friday. Hopefully we are notified maybe March 2?
