dropping human anatomy with a W

Published

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about dropping my human anatomy class. I was doing fine before our first lecture exam and practical (I had an A), but the practical kicked my ass. I didn't get my grade yet but I am pretty positive I got 30-40%. I guessed 80% of the practical. I just blanked and couldn't remember anything. If I did really bad in the practical, it will be really hard for me to get my grades back up. The lecture exam is worth 100 points and so does the practical. so a 30/100 would be really bad. I calculated and I would need a high B on every next exam/practical and I would need to ace all my quizzes to get a B. I am not even worried about getting a B. That's actually what I want. But I don't want to get a C, if that is the case I would like to drop it with a W.

Is a W bad on your transcript? especially for a science pre-req for nursing? I am thinking about taking it next semester and just dropping it this semester. I work full time and I think that is why I was so distracted and didn't prepare enough. And for anyone asking, yes I don't have a choice to work right now, I am supporting myself. And its unlike me to get bad grades, I have a 4.0 GPA, returning back to school (I have a BA already, but decided to go another career path).

Any input would be helpful! I just don't feel like I would be able to make it this semester.

I worked full time while going through nursing school too. It was hard but is doable. I had to withdraw during my last semester r/t child issues. Although it did not affect my getting a job, it did put me on a waiting list to get back into school. Best to ask your school instructor/counselor before making a final decision though. Make a list of pros and cons for you and your situation as well. Sometimes the visual of the list can shed light on your situation. Good luck.

Anatomy is a tough course. Were you carrying other tough courses? Only your academic advisor can answer this.

Best wishes.

Thanks for your response. I am not actually in the nursing program yet. I am taking all the pre-requisites before applying to an accelerated BSN program, since I already have a bachelor (unrelated field). So "getting back in" the program is not an issue. I was just wondering about the W, if that looks bad. When I went to orientation for the program I want to get into eventually, they told me that they do not care about Ws, but need at least a B in science prerequisites. I am also looking at other schools, but not sure about their policy about Ws.

This is the only class I am taking, I work full time to support myself. I've been out of school for awhile, I took a science class last semester to fulfill some of the prerequisites for nursing school and I got an A without any problem, so I thought it would be doable for Human Anatomy. But now I think I will have to do a do-over and work harder next semester. I don't think I will be able to get a B as a final grade for this class.

Been there, done that. One course at a time is okay. You are going to have to pass anatomy sooner or later. You already paid for it, any passing grade will work.

Let us know what your advisor says.

The program that I want to get in is very competitive. You need at least a B in anatomy to be considered. I might just drop this class this semester and just retake it in a few months. We'll see what my grade for the practical looks like. Will let you guys know this week.

I have an entire semester worth of Ws on my transcript and, in almost 11 years of being a nurse, no one has asked about it. It is easily explained, though, because I had to take a medical leave of absence. No one's looked at my transcript since I graduated as far as I know, actually.

im not so worried about the W. I am just disappointed that I have to drop it, I will be behind in my pre-requisites... :( which means I can only apply later

I had 2 Ws (Chem I and Bio 2) prior to matriculating into a ABSN program. I was not asked about those grades during my interview and I am in the top 3rd of my nursing cohort. It's better to protect that GPA so a W is better than 2 grades being factored into your GPA. Life will be filled with disappoints but what matters is how you handle it especially in nursing school and in the field. Just gotta move on and not dwell :)

Can you drop after seeing your grade? I'd wait and see how you did if possible...
