Dr. told patient, "Nurses are STUPID".

Nurses Relations

I am not easily offended and l let things roll off my back. The P.A. was making rounds the other day and walked into one of my patients room. I heard the patient ask, "A nurse came into my room at 3a.m. and put something in my IV. I have no idea what it was." The P.A. came out of the room and asked me what it was. I told him I was not sure, but I would find out and let him know. I followed that up with, I'm sure it was important if it was 3a.m. He smiled and thanked me, and walked back into the patients room. I heard him say, "you know, Nurses are stupid. They think if they are awake at 3 a.m. then you should be too." It was probably a flush to make sure the IV is still working. Anyhow, I'll find out fore sure." My mouth hit the floor. At that very moment, I remembered in report the nurse tell me the pt had a Bigeminy rhythm and he was given IV Mag, which corrected it. I quickly walked into the patients room and explained to the pt and P.A. what was given and why. The P.A. responded with a great big smile on his face, "See, I knew we would find out!" I still get pissed every time I think about it. I am a very quiet, non-confrontational person, but let me tell you....I can spit out a sarcastic comment that will make your head spin when I feel the need. I am feeling the need!

Well if a nurse just came and gave some medication to me without telling me what it was or what it was for I'd say he/she was stupid for not informing me of the drug.

The nurses are blowing it out of proportion and proving the PAs point.

it sounded like the PA was trying to help the patient calm down and develop a rapport.

you can say something and not mean it.

Nurses are not stupid, on the contrary, very clever. However, I think nurses are boring.

I've never socialized with nurses. When I make small talk I prefer to chat with physicians because they have something interesting to say. They have knowledge of topics beyond just working at the hospital.

For instance, some physicians travel around the world and share their travel stories with me. Some physicians are photographers in their spare time and they show me the pictures. Other physicians play in a rock band.

Nurses seem to be intellectually disinterested in the world, even if they are terrific nurse clinicians. Booooooring....

This IS a joke, right? You clearly don't know any of the nurses I know. (And you also don't know the meaning of the word "disinterested," to boot.) I'll probably get dinged for this, but what an incredibly ignorant thing to say. Perhaps none of the nurses you know want to talk to somebody with such a limited view of the world that s/he can't see what's right in front of his/her nose.

And if you'd like me to show you my pictures of the many countries I've traveled to and discuss the prevailing ethnoreligious groups therein, or ask me about the last couple of books I read, or how to spend the night outside safely at -15degF, or show you my tool bench and what I use those tools for, or how to start your own business and get out of hospitals altogether (yep, there are a LOT of nurses like me), then consider taking your head out of that really dark place it's in and ask me.

Reading your post I can make three interpretations: (1) people who are oppressed often identify with the aggressor. (2) people who are not centered in themselves try to increase their self worth by devaluing others. (3) If you are struggling with your own sense of inadequacy it is hard to make meaningful connections with others. Instead you make one dimensional observations that serve to artificially inflate your own faltering self esteem.

I am a nurse. I also read, study and travel. It's unfortunate that you are too concrete to see the value in your own teammates. It's possible that you are projecting your own superficiality onto your co-workers.

I'm amazed that the PA couldn't look at the chart and see what was given at 3 am. Also, if the PA was caring for the patient, he/she should've already known what was given.

New poster. One post. Hasn't come back. I'm getting a little suspicious that we're being punked by someone from SDN.

Do people from SDN come and do this sort of stuff? If that's true, don't they have anything better to do with their lives?

Establishing rapport does not include creating an alliance by denigrating another member of the team. That's simply childish and unprofessional. At 3AM, unless the pt. is fully alert and asks, I would seek to make my intervention as quietly as possible. Nobody is blowing this scenario out of proportion. You are minimizing it. People like you facilitate the continued oppression and devaluation of nursing by siding with a bully. Shame on you.

Exactly what I thought!!!!

Actually, all PA programs are not masters level. They are baccalaureates or masters depending on the school. Acceptance simply requires two years of college level study. Alternatively, all NP programs are graduate programs, either a masters or a doctorate level. I don't wish to denigrate PAs, simply wanted to set the record straight.

Sounds like you live in a shell.

Forgive me...what is SDN?
