Dr. told patient, "Nurses are STUPID".

Nurses Relations

I am not easily offended and l let things roll off my back. The P.A. was making rounds the other day and walked into one of my patients room. I heard the patient ask, "A nurse came into my room at 3a.m. and put something in my IV. I have no idea what it was." The P.A. came out of the room and asked me what it was. I told him I was not sure, but I would find out and let him know. I followed that up with, I'm sure it was important if it was 3a.m. He smiled and thanked me, and walked back into the patients room. I heard him say, "you know, Nurses are stupid. They think if they are awake at 3 a.m. then you should be too." It was probably a flush to make sure the IV is still working. Anyhow, I'll find out fore sure." My mouth hit the floor. At that very moment, I remembered in report the nurse tell me the pt had a Bigeminy rhythm and he was given IV Mag, which corrected it. I quickly walked into the patients room and explained to the pt and P.A. what was given and why. The P.A. responded with a great big smile on his face, "See, I knew we would find out!" I still get pissed every time I think about it. I am a very quiet, non-confrontational person, but let me tell you....I can spit out a sarcastic comment that will make your head spin when I feel the need. I am feeling the need!

Nurses are not stupid, on the contrary, very clever. However, I think nurses are boring.

I've never socialized with nurses. When I make small talk I prefer to chat with physicians because they have something interesting to say. They have knowledge of topics beyond just working at the hospital.

For instance, some physicians travel around the world and share their travel stories with me. Some physicians are photographers in their spare time and they show me the pictures. Other physicians play in a rock band.

Nurses seem to be intellectually disinterested in the world, even if they are terrific nurse clinicians. Booooooring....

What a crock.

I've never socialized with nurses.

Then you wouldn't really be privy to how interesting they are out of the hospital setting, would you? I'll talk about all my travels and show you all my great photos outside of work-because I darn sure don't have time to do that when I'm on the clock.

SMH...

I think that PA needs a 3 am wake up call/page for a week straight!

Wether a PA of Physician, it really doesn't matter. Is almost as if we would be saying if he was a Doctor it would be more ok for him to say such a thing. For somebody who should be a professional it's very distasteful and unethical for him to behave like that in front of a patient. It's quite disturbing the way some Doctors behave towards Nurses...I think it translates into a gender issue...the lack of respect and equality for women in our society never ceases to amaze me...hence we get less pay than male nurses etc etc. I feel absolute pity for people who have to tear others down inorder to feel good about themselves and sometimes you just have to let people know exactly what you think of them and their behaviors. Too long have Nurses just sat down and take disrespect from Doctors and a Nurse dare not being perceived as being muchless to actually be disrespectful to Doctors or else they will be written up faster than you can count to 10. The so called educated can behave so ignorant at times it's baffling!

If they only knew how many times we could call them stupid but instead we manage up and make them look good. While usually taking all the heat and frustration from the patient so they smell like a rose.

Write his ass up.

His statement says more about HIM than it does about you. He'll be sick sometime & discover the truth.

You probably have found nurses to be boring because you're around them 24/7, and we tend to keep our conversation at a professional level as colleagues to get on with the program and get the job done. Frankly, of all the health care professionals, we hardly have time for chatter, given the ever increasing workload. As an ED nurse, I can count on one hand the number of times I've had a full 15 minute tea break, needless to say find time to talk about social events. I suppose that's the boring part, but outside of work, I have a varied circle of associates that I hold a healthy amount of diverse discussions with. An observation I've made in the past 2 decades inclusive of my student years as a nurse, is that it is difficult to be close with most nursing colleagues due to an uncanny habit by nurses to outwit each other and be favorites with management, doctors and patients alike. That has taught me to be nothing but myself at work, and to be the best I can be to patients, and be a meaningful part of the team. I avoid being over familiar, for it breeds contempt.

1) A PA is not a doctor, as much as many of them think they are. 2) This was totally unprofessional. I would have reported him to my supervisor and his supervising physician. We are supposed to be a healthcare TEAM! Frankly, I would rather see a nurse practitioner over a PA any day. They are better with patients, more observational, and careful.

Yes, nurses are stupid. Why do you think they are always feel like a victims? because originally they think they are smart when they are not. I'm not saying that PA or MD are smart. Just stating the hidden and easily denied fun facts that nurses don't like admitting.

Maybe this whole sordid episode could have been averted if the nurse administering the medication had informed the patient about what she was doing, which is standard nursing practice. As far as the boorish PA goes, he should be ignored altogether. I have an inkling that being ignored is what he hates most in life.

You posted awhile back about having failed the NCLEX-PN exam, so I would be careful about calling anyone stupid.
