Doubtful and then Reassured!!

For a few months of thinking, I had pretty much made up my mind that I wanted to study to become an RN.. Then, over the past week, I was getting uncertain and was considering changing my mind... But, I was watching an episode of "Untold Stories in the ER" and it completely made me realize why I wanted to become an RN in the first place. First and foremost, I would be there helping to save lives.. Second, it is an exciting place to be. There is always something going on.

I want to save people.. To make a difference. I think I was just getting nervous and psyching myself out of doing it because I hear so many people talking about the tests, and the things they have to remember... I know i can do it.. I need to have more confidence in myself.... lol So I know that this post won't really help anyone with their own questions or concerns..but I just wanted to post it...

For anyone doubting whether or not to go into the RN program, just watch some episodes of ER and others like it... :) I have been so addicted to that show... :) :rotfl:

Glad you had some insight and are choosing to continue on. Good luck to you! :)

Best of luck to you. Sometimes it is hard, but it is so worth it. I study more than I did the first time I went to college, but I really feel like I know my stuff. When I feel overwhelmed I think about my future patients and how much they will appreciate a nurse who learned everything she could. If you have the Discovery Health channel, they have a show called Nurses. I am not sure when it is on, I saw it the other day in the late morning.

I understand where you are coming from. I question my ability at times....."If I can't make an A in Microbiology during the summer, how can I do well in nursing???" :uhoh3:

We just need to not be so critical on ourselves.

I've read that there are C students that go one to make great nurses. So....I guess I can manage with a B in Micro. lol

Good luck to you!

(I love Discovery Health Channel!) lol

I love making a difference.

It's great when patients come in and recognize you. I had a gentleman in with a Chrohns flare-up who was in so much pain. I had to do an EKG and he had his sweatpants pulled over his heels like socks when I tried to put the leads on his legs. I made kind of a joke like " what is this, where are your feet?" He came in again months later and both he and his wife remembered me as" the girl who likes your sweatpants slippers". It was the only time he smiled during the ordeal.

Same here. Ultimately, I want to become an RN as well, but along the way, you can become discouraged and feel that the road is winding more than it should. I watch "Untold Stories of the ER" as well. That is a great show. It truly does remind of why you have chosen this career path.

My philosophy is that, the first step in succeeding, is believing in yourself.

I'm entering an RN program in the fall (that's in 2 mos.!), and I too am having doubts. A LOT of it is lack of self-confidence. I don't question my ability to learn the material, although maybe I should. I question my ability to juggle all my responsibilities and not be a quitter. Part of me wants to be an RN so bad, to do something meaningful, to get up and DO something every day instead of sitting at a desk. But another part of me just wants the status quo, crawl under a rock. It's just fear. I think I have to go for it. The worst thing that happens, I flunk out and waste my husband's IRA money he's letting me use. But at least I will have given it a shot. To succeed you have to be willing to fail. I have to stop forestalling myself before I've even made and attempt!

I am a medical assistant and am currently taking my bsn pre reqs. when I was in medical assistant school I had dreams of working in a plastic surgery office then one day going into the OR. Well after I had been out of school for about 2 years my dreams finally came true, I got a job with an awesome plastic surgeon. I was soo psyched I went in on my first day and we were doing liposuction on a patient and guess what, I FAINTED! I could not believe it. I have worked in so many medical jobs but somehow I just do not have the stomach for surgery. It continued on other jobs I had also so I know it wasnt just that day. blood doesnt bother me I think just the cutting, I don't know I hope I can get over it.
