It was normal to have to do two or three peer evaluations for yearly performance review (along with your "self evaluation"). Our new director has assigned every nurse to fill out a peer review on 10 other staff members. AAAAUGGHHH! I hate filling out one or two let alone 10!! Does anyone like doing these? Does anyone respect or even read these?

Wow. I've never had to do that, but I imagine it could lead to some pretty hard feelings, no?
Nothing like having to put it in writing, unless it's good.

oh yeah. its a great opportunity to "get" at someone you don't like - i have seen nurses talk about THAT first hand!!! the 'i wrote a three page rant on so and so" gets old.

How awful. I don't see how that could benefit anyone, other than to divide co-workers. Peer Evaluations should be in the top 10 on the list of "How to Alienate People."
I'll take an honest evaluation from my manager, but I'd rather live in sweet oblivion than to hear it from my co-workers.

I see no useful purpose for these. Waste of time and at best useless. At worst, a potential for bad feelings and inappropriate perceptions.

They are a total waste of time. We get to pick who does ours, and obviously we are going to ask someone who will do a good review.
When someone asks me I just mark all 3's (exceeds expectations) and turn it in. I'm not in management; it's not my job to evaluate others' job performance.
If there's someone I don't feel I can give a good eval to, I just tell them I would rather not do it.

I also believe that this is a useless practice. I don't trust the judgements of quite a few of my peers, and sometimes, the negative comments are not objective. I voted to get rid of those things in my committee a few months back.

I despise those peer reviews as well. I feel that reveiwing everyone's job performance is managements responsibility. This is a setup for causing problems between staff.

Peer evaluations are one of the worst things about my job. They definitely lead to hard feelings; no doubt. You have no choice but to come up with some need-to-improve items on your coworkers and it gets so petty.
There has got to be a better way for managers to get information for annual reviews.

Seems like everyone agrees that peer evals suck. I always attempt to be generous unless there are really, really big issues. No one has a great day everyday. If more of us remembered to be kind to one another our work areas might be a little less stressful.
i can totally see the value in self evaluations. i think people are usually very honest on those. but i don't think peer evaluations serve any purpose except to make busy work and to cause hard feelings. we had one girl come out crying last year after getting her eval when our management implemented self evaluations. pretty crappy and it was so not right. she was one of the newer nurses, sharp as a tack and very smart, took great care of our patients... but she was YOUNG and was not on the good side of a lot of the older nurses (for no good reason except that they just didn't like her personality).

We don't do them. Thank God.
