Nurses General Nursing

Published

I just need to vent and hopefully some of you great nurses out there can help me!

I am currently a nursing student in my junior year enrolled in a BSN program. And over the past summer I worked as a student nurse/PCA at a very prominent hospital in the area. One day as I was coming on to start my shift when the clinical nurse specialist told me that she and the nurse manager wanted to speak with me, which I was fine with...a little confused but whatever. I never would of thought I was in trouble because I never had any issues with the staff or patients, or so I thought. In fact I always got high praises, letter and flowers from patients coming back to visit.

Since the nurse manager wasn't on the floor when at the beginning of my shift, I started my daily routine of taking vitals etc. When she returned I was brought into the office and was told that a complaint was filed against me in the beginning of the week. Anyway, apparently the complaint was that when I was doing my 3:00p.m. vitals on a patient, I never recorded them in the chart, and that I never completed them in its entirety. The person that complained (to my understanding) was the wife of a patient who was a nurse on a different floor of the same hospital. Of course, I denied the allegation to the fullest because it was completely untrue. And she had no proof, it was her word against mine. I even requested the chart and lo and behold the vitals were charted and initaled by ME. I was actually told by the day nurse who started his vitals to just finish them up, but with me not knowing what she completed I did them over myself. While I was in the meeting I never got to explain anything that happened, I was talked over, and told I was lying. I tried explaining to them the wife wasn't in the room when I was taking them so how could she have known? The wife probably didn't see me do everything including write them down, considering she was always in and out the room. So at the end of it all I was told that I was being suspended with pay until she could "investigate" the situation. I simply obliged and went home (very sad and angry) and prayed that she would see the truth.

Now a little background. I am the only African American person on the entire floor. And I always felt that was an issue for a few of the nurses, but me being me I still treated them the same utmost respect. I tried talking to them during free time, and made cookies for the 4th of July, and went out of my way to help all of them even if I wasn't assigned to that particular nurse all in an attempt to warm them up to me. To my surprise I walked in on a few situations where I was being talked about with them saying the only reason I got this job was because of affirmative action, and one time I was referred to a "N....." (yes, the "N-word", something I NEVER say). It hurt of course, but I took it like a grain of salt and held my head high still respecting them and doing my job the best of my abilities. The nurse manager never got to know me on a "personal level" as I contributed it to her always being busy. But I realized that she was always more welcoming to the other student nurse/PCA who started with me who was coincidential causcasian often inviting her to lunch, and plain showing favoritism. Again, I never said anything, I just did my job not wanting to make a fuss or come off as a pansy. To me the nurse manager was very influential to the staff nurses in a negative way. She only engaged in the staff she liked etc. I honestly think the "investigation" consisted of her just asking around about me to a bunch of women who didn't like me to begin with. I am not one to pull the race card considering the time we live in, but I just can't shake the fact that discrimination is exactly what I experienced.

Fast forwarding to the day after the meeting less than 24 hours from the inital meeting. When I was at home, I received a phone call from the nurse manager saying that I was terminated for "not making progress within 90 days of hire." However, what was more odd about it all was that she called me in her office about 3:30p.m. the previous day and she leaves at 4-5:00p.m. If there was an "investigation" made since her decision came less than 24 hours, when did she have time to look into it considering she wasn't even in the hospital? Being in shock all I could do was cry because I was so upset and hurt by everything. I asked her what the "investigation" consisted of she never answered the question directly which was suspicious to me. But again, I swallowed my pride, took the outcome and thanked her for giving me the opportunity to work with them. According to another nurse manager on another floor, if I was being fired for that reason the CNS or NM was required to give me at least one warning. Something I never received.

I called my mother at work in tears and told her what happened. And she started to cry with me, because the money I was trying to earn that summer was to help pay for school. As a result of this all I had to work full time Fall, 2006 to earn that money back. She told me to call HR and check on the policies. Of courses, all the policies that were recited back to me protected the decision of the NM. I filed my incident with a state agency, and when I got the hospital's response to everyting amung a bunch of legal documents etc. I saw that I am no longer eligible for rehire for that healthcare system here. Meaning when I do get my RN that eliminates 3+ hospitals that I can work at all because of this. It is literally little ol' me a nursing student against this HUGE organization that happens to be one of the biggest employers in the state.

I have never felt this way before in my entire life. I truly hope that no one has to ever experience this. Please give me insight on your opinions regarding this. I can use it right about now!

I'm really sorry to hear that that happened to you. I agree, I really think you should get a lawyer and file a complaint. Do whatever you have to do. I understand that this eliminates three hospitals for future jobs, but I am sure you wouldn't want to work in that particular hospital again, anyway. I know I wouldn't. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't understand how the wife of a pt. would even know if VS had been charted or not. Did she have access to the pt. chart? It sounds like a set up to me. Like the previous poster, I don't see that even if one set of vitals didn't get charted, it would be the end of the world, certainly not something to dismiss someone over. I am really sorry that this happened to you and I wish the best. Keep us posted.

I am appalled that this ever happened and I think you need to get mad and do something about it. At the least, that hosptial should pay for their discrimination. I wouldn't ever want to work there, but I'd want it on record that they discriminate. I would NEVER want to work for a place that discriminates. I try so hard not to discriminate against others. Just becuase someone has a different skin color, doesn't mean squat! There are horrible white people and there are horrible people of other colors, but there are also more wonderful people of all colors and you'd never know it if you don't get to know them.

I pray that I never work at a facility with that many close minded people. It's amazing to me that we haven't come further than this...it seems like this post could have been written in 1950. Sad.

She has to go to the EEOC first. She can't sue in Federal Court for discrimination until the EEOC has had a chance to review the case. Now, with that said, the EEOC will try to resolve the situation, and then they will reach a decision on whether or not they felt discrimination has taken place or not.

No matter what the EEOC has decided, you can still sue in Federal Court, and if the EEOC has decided in your favor, that is added weight.

Technically, you can go straight to Federal Court but the judge always asks, "Have you exhausted all of your remedies with the EEOC."

The EEOC will explain this process to you and it is also on their website.

totally agree with the above. If one lawyer told you to gather everything but didn't want to help, find another one. Trying to get this info on your own is nearly impossible (HR and management will just stonewall you, run you in circles or just ignore you) -Now, getting the lawyer to put these requests in writing, on his (her) letterhead, THAT usually gets results. Just don't be intimidated by them. Even in a 'right to work' state like my own, they still have rules that THEY have to follow -and it sounds like for whatever reason, they definately targeted you, and did so in an inappropriate way.

Even if you decide to never work there again (I sure as heck wouldn't) you need to get this resolved if for no other reason than your own peace of mind -what they did was wrong -completely. This started as an accusation that you did not do and chart vitals -and yet you showed where you HAD, and signed that you had -YOUR word was backed up by paperwork evidence, your accusers' word is just a word. Legally, yours would hold more weight (paperwork is hard to disprove).

Sounds like the nurse who reported you was probably the racist assuming the worst of you, since she didn't "see" you do it. Was the patient demented or unaware? We get family members who insist their loved one didn't get their meds, fed, water etc (accusing the cnas of not doing their job) even when it has been us personally that made sure the patient did recieve those things, because we know the patient in question is unable to do those things for themselves or sometimes even ask. It can be very frustrating to deal with family members sometimes as you know you are doing your very best and they still don't believe you. Sounds like you had the bad luck to get a situation that was trumped up as an excuse to get rid of you. They clearly were prejudiced from the start and you probably never had a chance. I'm glad you no longer work with such closeminded people, but I'm sad that now the other hospitals are closed off to you. Good luck!

Find a lawyer who will help. File that complaint. I know that its still not a comforting thought that you might indeed take on this large facility, but the ball is in your yard, so either kick it into play or just toss it over the fence in the alley. Next time this happens immediately start a paper trail, file a complaint with HR, never allow yourself to be called that name. Remember this as a learning experience, but that does not mean you are the only one who needs to learn to treat others with respect. Blessings to you.

something kinda like that happened to me (not the racial issue) but because i came to the hospital for my shift and started feeling bad i had another nurse check my vs my temp was 101.2, low and behold it felt like i had the flu my nurse manager sent me home and told me to check up in a day or two i called the next day still feeling horrible and even went to another hospital because i was so awful anf achy i could hardly breathe or move. note i was still in my 90 probationary/orientation period. total days missed now are up to 2 with my NM consent, then the next 3 days i was scheduled off anyways, and when i came back she basically ask me to resign to keep from being terminated for not being "committed to my work" shown by me not being to work in a week.... it was total bs and ridiculous. i didnt think she had enough ammo agaisnt me b/c that was the only thing that ever happened. my co-workers liked me as well as patients all with good praises. i geuss she wanted to fill those empty shifts with her own self... anyways i moved on got over and found better employment! so don't give up there are nazi DON's and NM and Coworkers every now and then. just remember God doesnt like ugly... if it wasnt fair those people will get whats coming "what goes around comes back around"

Aye, but there is certainly nothing wrong with helping them get their commupance a little faster. Don't let it go entirely -follow through with the legal help. Who knows? You may save the next person from having to go through this as well.

Oh, I am so sorry that this has happened to you. Sure, I see it as discrimination and something even more...blatant racism if they used racial slurs against you. You get you a good lawyer and make them sorry that they have hate in their hearts. Oh, and karma is a bad boy, so they will get what's coming to them. I don't know how easy it will be to prove that you were discriminated against if you decide to pursue this. And I don't know if you live in an at-will hiring state. Because if you do, then they can blame your termination on anything they want to or they don't have to have a reason. But, nevertheless, don't give up without at least a fight, if you have the means for it. Sometimes, I feel that other ethnic groups do not understand how it is to be reminded daily of your skin color. Where others may see a different angle on this, you, as an African-American or Black nurse may not see something different because of our experiences in life. I don't consider that playing the race card, you're just conveying how you feel and how you were treated.

It's a shame that in this day and time, there are people that practice such an ugly thing such as discrimination and racism. I know what you are going through because I've been through it as well. I've almost come to accept it because it's nothing I can do about it. I just know that at times, I feel that because of my race, I have to work a little bit harder than nurses who are not Black, just to prove that it was my education, not my skin color, that got me my position. Speaking of skin color, since when did black become the color of privilege when it comes to getting things? Ha Ha, that sure is silly for someone to even bring that notion up to you. Affirmative Action has made little, if any, positive difference in how often people of color are hired. And now, a lot of companies have done away with it.

Well, anyway, please don't let it discourage you. Just continue to do what you do. I'm sure that you're a great nurse and that you will prevail. God will bless you with a great job that you will one day be able to forget about such a bad experience. I hope that you continue to love other people and remain color-blind. For you see, hate cannot survive long without adversity. You just continue to love people no matter what color they may be, and you will win out over that ignorance. God bless and keep your head up. Be proud of who you are and let no one make you feel less for what you are.:balloons:

I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you. Of course, it won't make it any easier to accept, but these kinds of things happen frequently. People who get it in their head that they are going to hurt you will do so. Just try to keep it in mind that not everybody conducts themselves in that manner, nor do they find that behavior acceptable. Hopefully, you will find a better place, where the employees are not so hateful. Our prayers are with you.

This is discrimination, this is racism, and these people are bullies.

I am glad you don't have to work with them anymore, but I am sad for you how this ended.

You sound very conscientious. Aside from racial differences (which are clearly there if they used the N word. I hate that!) many times bullies will target a conscientious, hard worker. You mentioned you get praise from your patients and their families. Do these other people? Are you a bit of a favorite? You may be showing them up! Rather than working harder, they diminish you.

I don't know what legal steps you can take, but after you have dealt with that, take a hard look at your next working environment and run, don't walk, away from abuse.

It is not like this everywhere!
