Does anyone else like working night shift besides me?

Hello; I've tried dayshift a couple of times and always retreated back to nightshift. I like the staff. I like the quiet. I like the extra pay. Day's and swing shift have administration, overhead paging, visitors, meals, and doctors to deal with. Each with their own level of anxiety that they cheerfully pass along to the nurses. I've adapted to the sleep cycle and can easily flip from day to night sleeping. I'm just wondering if anyone likes to work nights?

I, also, LOVE my night shift! All my resident are NEVER ALL sleeping at the same time. I always have between 5 and 10 of them sitting in the day room stating, "I can't sleep", but they prompty fall fast asleep on the sofa or easy chair. Our doc usually rounds about 6 p.m. (really interfers with my med pass) but he usually only sees about 15 residents each time. The extra pay is great!

it's a night nurses myth that administration bugs day shift. i never see them. ever blue moon they pass through but don't stop to talk to peons like me, and really aren't interested. lol

no, tweety bird, it's not a myth! at my first facility when i worked pms you could almost feel the building breathe a sigh of relief around 4 pm because admin closed. before that you never knew who was going to walk through. same thing at my last facility, with the addition of the don and ceo......it was a rural place so they would round the building about once a week.

i loved working nights, for the first 11 years of my career i did a grand total of 2 day shifts and only as favors, but like tweety my body betrayed me. i not only got old but i had children. i have a whole admiration for night shift moms because i couldn't do it.

I love night!!! Fewer people, AND I like helping people sleep. :lol2:

My facility is like an entirely different universe on day shift! I would NEVER leave the night shift! Too many people from too many different arenas, all worrying too much about what the others are doing! I LOVE my job until 6:45 AM. At that point, I can't get out fast enough!

Another night shift lover here! :) Couldn't stand days when I did the rotation my first 7 months on the job. Now I'm permanent nights. Love it.

I love nights,.have worked 7p-7a for almost 10 yrs now. I work ER however and it isn't any quieter and we don't see less pts,.but night shifters have their own unique personalities,..I love it!

How does the night shift effect your relationships? Are you always on that schedule even when you're off? Or are you able to spend time with your family and friends during your days off without it throwing you too much?

I did it for over 8 years. Here in the UK done slightly different but I did 7 nights on then had 7 nights off as I did all my hours (75 hours) in the one week. Even better if I took a weeks holiday/vacation time had 3 weeks off

Started working nights (rotating shifts) in another profession. Went on nights so I could go to nursing school on days, and have grown accustomed to nights. I love nights for all the reasons stated above. Anything that I have to get done during the days, I make allowances for, otherwise I just work and sleep or attempt to sleep. Not good on my body, but I prefer the quiet of nights. Now I'm working days, not due to my choice, and I don't like it. Am looking for another night shift position. As far as I'm concerned, at my age, I'll stay a night shift person until I retire.

I don't think you could pay me enough to go to days. And my co-workers feel the same way - L&D nights at my hospital are considered coveted positions! Right now, the new grads are being hired for the day positions because none of the current night-shift RNs will make the transition.

I've worked nights off/on for 10+ years all pre-nursing. I never adjusted well to it though but I had a very small child at home at the time and I worked 8 hour nights with rotating days off.

Now, he's 10 and I work every Mon, Tues, Wed night. I love it. I like the workflow, the people, the lack of administration watching us. I like the bonds we have with one another. I like the fact my work day winds the other way. I'm busy when I get to work and then around midnight or 1 a.m., it slows down for us and we have more down time (I work rural ER).

Sure we have less staff but I think we are better at handling stuff because we have less staff to work with.

And then they pay me more!!!! Wow.
