Does anyone here actually like or "not mind" cleaning poop???

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I have just completed my first year as an RN, BSN a couple of weeks ago. Nothing much to celebrate after I find out that I worked that hard

only to be cleaning so much poop as a person with a 4 year degree.

I think the nursing profession is too modest and afraid to admit that someone else should be doing the dirty job. I love medicine....and I love being a nurse even when orders pile up, and next shift nags at you for every little thing undone during your shift because of time constrictions, like they come on their shift to just sit around and do nothing. I can take snobby, unexperienced, stubborn doctors; I can get along fine with middle-aged bitter, old nurses; I can handle grumpy patients, and suspicious families; I can handle snobby unlicensed assist. personnel; I can handle all that even when all that can be tiring.

But on top of all that, we RNs have to clean poop! I think that is why the nursing profession don't get so much credit, that's why nurses grow old bitter and eat the next generation of nurses, it's because they are overworked, underpaid, and cleaning poop really lowers their morale. You get out of school thinking wow i'm a professional....I worked so hard...then you go and clean poooppp....!!! Nasty, foul smelling poop.

For that reason.....only for that reason I am quitting being a hospital staff nurses at the Veteran's Hospital. I am going to continue being an RN, but not one who cleans poop. I hate that poopy part of our profession, so shoot me. :welcome:

Yes, her last visit to this site was 2a.m. on 9/18/2007, which was about an hour after she created this thread. In addition, the original post was her first and only post. In all likelihood, she has not returned to read the countless responses to her statements since she has not had any activity whatsoever in nearly 3 days.

I noticed that she was gone a couple of days ago!

Ok, this thread is starting to feel like a good olE boys club. There were some terrific points made, but it's starting to get pretty ugly towards the OP. Hopefully she managed to see some of the wonderful posts enough to see other perspectives and not feel too maligned. I know there are some folks here who could use a good butt wipe themselves after some classless remarks that were written.

Moderators can we please, CLEAN THIS MESS UP?

I am going to attempt to disagree without being overly disagreeable. :)

To be perfectly honest, I have seen and read absolutely nothing messy that is worthy of cleaning up. For the most part, the vast majority of the members have managed to remain opinionated, civil, blunt, and respectful. I personally haven't seen any personal attacks, name-calling, insult hurling, or other issues that would warrant editing or cleaning up. There's nothing that is worthy of moderator intervention.

Just had to add that I would much rather clean up the poop than to go in there and have to get it out when it's...well...let's just say-stuck. I guess the OP just hasn't been desensitized yet......in other words, had a child.

Hi, Earle58, I mentioned the above statement because I am an older Diploma Graduate RN. I sometimes get a bit of a hassle from the step-down unit or the ICU nurses because it does not say BSN after my name. They want to know why I am allowed to work in one of the highest level of nursing care areas in the hospital. Why? Because as my supervisor said "There is something to be said for the ability of taking in and observing the whole patient and having your care reflect that." It is so easy to get sucked into viewing all the fancy monitors, feeling personal satisfaction in being on top of all the rapid response verbal medication orders and the requests for STAT equipment. Those are skills we need to to be able to do rapidly and with total confidence. But, how about continuous monitoring of the patient's coloring, verbal & non-verbal responses and perhaps a gentle touch to the forehead - in between x-ray exposures, can comfort while checking the skin at the same time? As only the face is exposed after scrubbing and draping, people sometimes forget there is a person under there. I think I usually catch patients begining to crash earlier by listening and looking at - surprise - the patient. This is why I felt so horrible that my patient lay in her own BM rather than tell me. I should have thought twice about the where that oder was coming from at the start of the proceedure and then I could have caught the situation much earlier and the patient would not have been so uncomfotable for as long as she was.

I think what I was tryig to say was, with the advantages available with a higher the level of education, the more important and expected total patient care should be.Thank you for your comment and support!

I ran into a HS classmate of mine who asked me if I was a CNA. I told him that I was and his response was "So you change diapers right?" I told him yes as that is part of my job and I will still be doing it as a nurse. He proceeded to tell me that he didn't want to go into nursing because of that. I wasn't offended because there are many jobs out there that are too "disgusting" for me to do, or jobs that I KNOW I would not be happy doing. Do I enjoy poop? Heck no! LOL! But it's the least of my concern and I would take that anyday in place of the things that Trama mentioned. I will admit, however, that the idea of one day having to give an enema makes me weak in the stomach.

I was worried about my first enema too. We don't give them a lot where I work, so I was just waiting for the day when I'd have one ordered...well, that happened last week. I had another nurse come in with me, and I got it ready and squeezed, and it was done. Easy peasy.

Cleaning up the "results" is not quite as easy, but you already have experience with that :)

Try milk & molasses enema --- now that is an experience! :lol2:

LOL, I hope my first time giving an enema is just as smooth as yours. I think I'm still traumatized by the ones I received as a child. I was NOT a happy camper! LOL!
