Does anyone here actually like or "not mind" cleaning poop???

Published

I have just completed my first year as an RN, BSN a couple of weeks ago. Nothing much to celebrate after I find out that I worked that hard

only to be cleaning so much poop as a person with a 4 year degree.

I think the nursing profession is too modest and afraid to admit that someone else should be doing the dirty job. I love medicine....and I love being a nurse even when orders pile up, and next shift nags at you for every little thing undone during your shift because of time constrictions, like they come on their shift to just sit around and do nothing. I can take snobby, unexperienced, stubborn doctors; I can get along fine with middle-aged bitter, old nurses; I can handle grumpy patients, and suspicious families; I can handle snobby unlicensed assist. personnel; I can handle all that even when all that can be tiring.

But on top of all that, we RNs have to clean poop! I think that is why the nursing profession don't get so much credit, that's why nurses grow old bitter and eat the next generation of nurses, it's because they are overworked, underpaid, and cleaning poop really lowers their morale. You get out of school thinking wow i'm a professional....I worked so hard...then you go and clean poooppp....!!! Nasty, foul smelling poop.

For that reason.....only for that reason I am quitting being a hospital staff nurses at the Veteran's Hospital. I am going to continue being an RN, but not one who cleans poop. I hate that poopy part of our profession, so shoot me. :welcome:

if you think fleets are bad, wait til you've experienced a soap suds enema.

it cleans you out, all the way up to your throat.

btw nydreamer, does this mean digital disimpaction is crossed off your to-do list? :chuckle (or should i say, your do-do list)

hehe...she said do-do...

(sorry, channeling beevis and butthead)

in regards to the milk and molasses enema--this I have heard of, but only on this board in the "strangest orders" thread. So. These actually exist? I can't imagine they'd be easy to administer...

But tasty, no doubt. That is, before arriving at their final destination...

ugg...I'm sorry. I have the maturity of a 10 year old sometimes.

:)

but seriously--what is the M&M fleet used for?

Worked with a gyn/onc who would prescribe this for his patients with severe constipation. Mix 1/2 and 1/2 warm milk and molasses (one cup to one pint each). It worked, but God what a mess

I know there have been several replies to this thread but I really have to chime in my 2 cents here.

First of all, cleaning up a patient is YOUR JOB. Sure we have Nursing assistants to help us, but YOU, the NURSE are ultimately responsible for what goes on downstairs. Skin integrity is something that is being more paid attention to nowadays (especially in the legal system), mainly because it's something that can be PREVENTED. I don't think anyone can honestly say they love cleaning up poop, but we do it because we want what is best for our patient's. I can't imagine being in one of their positions, how humiliating it must feel.

Secondly, I would much rather clean up poop EVERY DAY if that meant that I didn't have to take care of families who were just told that there 3 year old has cancer, or have to take a child to the morgue who has lost their battle to it.

I think when you put things into perspective, cleaning up poop at work should be the least of anyone's worries.
