Do You Ever Ignore Your Employer's VM When They Try to Call You In?

Published

My employer called a couple of hours ago asking me to work tonight. Honestly, I have been shoveling snow for hours and am tired and sore and absolutely do not feel like driving in to work and staying up all night. We are chronically short staffed and I feel guilty for not answering my phone or calling back, but I'm afraid that if I call back I'll cave in and work, and I REALLY don't want to.

Also, yesterday when my street was drifted shut and I was unable to get out to drive to work, I asked if they would send someone in a 4WD to come and pick me up, since they had said that they would offer this to everyone who couldn't make it in due to the weather but they told me no, because I live in an outlying area, but that I would still be charged with a call off. Does this seem right? I was willing to work, I just couldn't get there and they backed down on having someone come and get me as promised.

I'm feeling pretty conflicted right now; angry, guilty, frustrated, anxious...

I never pick up unless I am OK with working that night. Do not feel guilty, they would rather call and hound current staff to come in to work instead of training and maintaining a larger float pool resource. That in turn makes it not your problem or obligation.

If I have no intention of going in, I don't answer and don't return the call. Why would I feel guilty? I committed 36 hours per week to them when I hired in full time. No more, no less. They have not promised me overtime. Why would I feel obligated to give it to them?

I was asked to fill in for a nurse on two different occasions, at least one being a holiday (holiday pay). I thought I was being a team player as well as earning money. After I had made arrangements, I got told that plans changed at the last moment, and I would not be working. I figured out how I was being treated and when this happened the third time, I was not available. Believe it or not, my time and effort are important to someone, ME.

At one place I worked the nursing supervisior asked me to come in. I said "I can't I've got plans". She responded "what can you possibly be doing that you need a day off?"

I can't tell you what I would have said to that. It's too rude and very inappropriate, but so was her question.

I have no problem letting a call go to VM. If I'm feeling nice, I have no problem calling them and saying "I can't". Take care of you first.

I had a supervisor once tell me something like this, but she had a sense of humor in that I would have known right away by her tone that she was kidding. If your supervisor wasn't kidding with this question, I hope you started looking for another job!

I always let it go to voicemail and if I decide to go in (which is rare) I will call back.

I NEVER feel obligated to answer or go in. If it is that bad, management could go in. I might actually be more willing to pick up if they were.

I have NO guilt for not going in. We always run short and at the time we just deal with it. That may seem mean, but I have a life...even if it just means watching tv.

I was married yesterday at 11:30 - work had the cahones to ask if I'd pick up some hours later in the day. Haha plus, i was on champagne número dos and wasn't in any condition to work.

There are people who completely lack a sense of humor and wouldn't know kidding if it bit them.
