Did you believe it to be fair or justified? I'm just wondering how often it really happens and what the reason would be.....

Yep, for major clinical errors and then failing to meet for remediation. BUT I do know a few people in my class who was on the verge of being expelled and pulled it together or talked their way in to staying.

Yes. Most are "thrown out" due to unsafe clinical practice. Others fail out for different reasons.

1. I attended an RN completion program from early 2009 until early 2010. Someone was forced to withdraw from the program after not passing the dosage calculation exam after three attempts. All students were given three chances to pass, and the score had to be 100 percent in order to pass. Other students failed out of the program because their overall percentage was less than the 77 percent needed to pass.
2. I attended an LVN program from late 2004 until late 2005. One of my classmates failed out of the program because her final grade was less than the minimum 78 percent needed to pass the course. Another classmate withdrew because he knew there was no possible way he'd ever pass the course.

My class has gone down from about 60 students to 25 since starting in September. Most people fail out due to geting an average of less than 75% in a class or not passing ATI. A few have failed for unsafe clinical practices.

No one has been "thrown" out but about a half-dozen failed out for not ending each term with an average of 75% of greater. A couple failed clinicals for dangerous practice and a few removed themselves for different reasons. Some are coming back this fall.
I believe it is fair to need to maintain a certain level of competence. If a student is struggling, she/he will know after the first test or two and should go immediately to their advisor for help and better reading and studying strategies.

Oh gosh, because she was pregnant? Was it temporary until she had the baby or just gone? That seems so wrong but it would be hard to go through nursing school preggers.

I have known of people being dropped due to academic unhonesty, as well as not meeting "the progression standard".

I know of several people who failed out of specific classes (pharmacology, mostly), but no one who has been kicked out because of disciplinary reasons. I think that you'd have to commit a pretty big faux pas for that to occur.

One student was asked to leave because she was 'socially inept'. She was brilliant, but just could not function in a clinical environment. It was sad, but absolutely appropriate in my opinion.
