Do you know of anyone who has been thrown of of nursing school/program? And why?

Did you believe it to be fair or justified? I'm just wondering how often it really happens and what the reason would be..... :uhoh3:

Although several failed because of poor grades, there was only one from my 2nd year class who was actually "forced out" or dismissed. She was not in my clinical group, but from what I heard, during her clinical day spent at a cancer clinic within the hospital, she apparently got a little too involved in one pt's care. She questioned this pt's care & treatment, TO THE PT. As in making statements like "why are they (doc/treatment team) doing this or giving you this. I would think this would be better" etc. The pt got worked up & started asking a lot of questions, thinking that she was not being given the best care or treatment for her condition. The student was walked out from the clinical site (I think this all happened before noon) & the clinical instructor was contacted. Needless to say, we never saw her again.

One instructor also told us about one student who was dismissed a few years prior, because it was found that she was not actually assessing her pts at all. In the program I attended, being dismissed is not something common & the instructors made it clear that to fail your clinical, you had to do something unsafe that you clearly should have known better, NOT just simple mistakes we all make. Some of the descriptions I've heard of other programs are just terrible & I can't imagine having such mean instructors that seem to want to railroad their students.

Oh, & the whole thing about being forced to leave JUST because your pregnant is plain wrong. My 3rd child was born during my last semester of school. As long as you have MD clearance with lifting restrictions, & are able to complete the number of clinical hrs, it's all good! Of course, it's not easy!

Our school kicks people out every semester, as well as the students that fail or drop out. Last semester they kicked out 7 students, for a plethora of reasons. Some examples include:

1) being completely incapable of interpersonal interactions (he could not hold a conversation with anyone without the other person feeling extremely uncomfortable- something that could have been avoided if our school did interviews prior to admission)

.

I wish interviews really gave a true picture of what type of personality the student actually had. Interviews are like first dates: you make yourself look all pretty, and say exactly what you're supposed to.

I totally agree with you ProfRN4. Lots of people could get through the interview process and be weeded out later, or even worse make it through nursing school and be poor RNs. However, this gentleman would NOT, under any circumstances, have made it through the interview. He was 100% incapable of appropriate (let alone therapeutic!) human interaction, but had a high GPA from a previous math/science degree.
