Do you know of anyone who has been thrown of of nursing school/program? And why?

Did you believe it to be fair or justified? I'm just wondering how often it really happens and what the reason would be..... :uhoh3:

O i def plan on fighting till death.. ive come too far to let this one go.

I'm kind of surprised by some of the weeding out numbers. I recently asked Johns Hopkins admissions about their retention rate and they basically said that if you start the program, you'll finish the program and very few people don't.

Admission standards and criteria vary greatly among schools. Some schools are more careful and demanding about who they accept, and have a nearly 100% graduation rate. Other schools will take pretty much anyone with a pulse and the $$$, even people who could not reasonably be expected to be able to do college-level academic work, and "weed out" the people they feel may have problems with the NCLEX close to graduation (or just don't care how many people fail out during the program -- they still get to pocket the tuition money).

This is one reason why I always caution people (when asked) that the NCLEX passing rate isn't the only number one needs to be concerned with when "shopping" for nursing programs. One program may have a 100% pass rate and another school may only have an 89% or 90% pass rate -- the first school may look like a "better" program. But if the first school starts with a class of 75 and only 25 end up graduating (and all 25 pass the NCLEX, giving them a 100% first-time pass rate), you've got to wonder what's going on at the school.

I know 2 people that were kicked out just recently...one was justified, she didn't do any of her nurse squared work (a HUGE part of clinicals and was required) and she walked off the floor at clinicals without telling anyone...another big nono...

then my best friend was kicked out because she was PREGNANT!!! seriously! basically they said because she couldn't fit in her uniform any more and she couldn't afford to buy a new one (they cost 175$ from Dove) they said she'll have to finish the semester and wait a year before reapplying....pretty messed up imo..

In regards to the women who were kicked out d/t pregnancy, I smell a lawsuit! (Although I understand why it would be unsafe for a pregnant woman to be present for clinicals bc of the risk of infection/disease, especially with contact patients, plus how the labor-intensive stuff ie. moving patients, can be harmful) But at least let them complete the academic (non-clinical) stuff, and return post-delivery!

Here's a good "student getting thrown out" story:

My CLASS PRESIDENT was arrested during spring break during our first semester, in connection with a HUGE million dollar prescription drug ring (netted about 20 arrests), in which she forged scripts of controlled substances in her name. A huge story (in the newspaper, on TV!) in which all of the teachers, including the head of nursing & president of our school saw unfold in the media. Needless to say, she was expelled...

If you're gonna screw up, screw up good! :smokin:

We had a girl in our RN program that during clinicals, she removed a spinal needle from a patient....without any prior instruction to do so....she was dismissed that day !

A lot of people cannot pull grades together. We only allowed to repeat 2 classes. If you fail 2nd attempt - you out of the program.

We've had lots of people fail out, but only one (out of a beginning total of 180) that got kicked out. He allegedly emailed a bunch of the questions/answers from the final to well, pretty much all of us. I don't know for sure how/what happened, but I did get the email from his email addy and there was an attachment that was full of test questions. The final had to be re-written, and despite appeals, he got kicked out of the program. I don't know all the evidence, but obviously, the school had enough to believe they were indeed justified in kicking him out.

i have yet to meet anyone in my program that has been thrown out yet, but i have a feeling this one girl who is around 32~ wks pregnant will, because she has probably missed 75% of class. every monday she has some excuse as to why she has to leave (car issues, kid #1,2,3, or 4 is sick, shes sick, this that & whatever) there are 2 or 3 other pregnant girls in our class who are always in class minus a day or two.

i dont think its fair that she can miss so many classes while the rest of us suffer :(

We've had a number fail out, maybe 25% or so. I think maybe 3 for cheating. One or two for doing unauthorized procedures during clinical (removing catheters/ IV's, miscellaneous stuff without permission). One for HIPPA violation.

We have a strict attendance policy (you can miss a certain number of lecture hours and only one day of clinical, which has to be made up). If you miss anymore that that you fail. No exceptions. They apply the exact same policy to everyone, that way it is fair. The instructors work with those who need to miss class/ clinical for a valid reason. One girl just had a baby and another is pregnant. They were able to do their clinicals early, etc so that they would meet the requirements.
