Hi. I'm a student in a Japanese Nursing School. Our school starts in April, and I just made it through first three months. I am facing a big problem, and I need to know the situation of the Nursing Schools in other countries.
We are learning how to wash and clean patients' body on bed. ( I suppose this is common in every nursing schools in the world.) BUT, when you learn and practice, do you wipe (clean) eachother in class? My teacher says the nurse-role students will be wearing the nurse uniform, and the parient-role students will have to take off all clothes except undear-shorts and lay in bed. We will have to take off bra too.
Is this common in your schools??? Is it?? Don't we have the basic human rights??
I have discussed this with some of the nursing students in other Japanese nursing schools. Some schools do not let students take off their clothes, but most schools are doing the same thing. Can you believe it? I never expected this. I was expecting to use a dole to practice.
What do you think??
NP students will often conduct pelvic exams and/or breast exams on the other - in many programs this is the norm.
I'm in a BSN/MSN program starting in the fall. I don't care what kind of nursing student you are, if you are my class mate we just don't need to know each other that well! I'm really pretty fine with being naked or nearly so for assessment, breast exams, bed baths, etc, but:
...or you'll pull back a bloody nub.
Thank you everyone for so many comments.I have talked with the head of the teachers yesterday. She understood my point of view and quite easily changed the rule and let us wear bathing suits. That's better. Much better than topless!!! Your comments encouraged me very much. Thanks.
YIPPEE!! NURSES UNITE!! I'm glad every one here was able to give you information and the strength to stand up for what is right! I'm sure you have paved the way for all the students behind you to not endure such an archaic practice!
I'm just in shock that i just read that. Did they actually want you to take your tops off, for school. Why in the world would they think that was appropriate. I mean we all know what body parts look like, and it is just as effective to learn how to bath someone with clothes on. And the pelvic exam thing...all i can say is YUCK. i am a guy and i would have no problem taking my shirt off maybe being in boxer shorts actually in my CNA class i was the only guy so i was the Guinea pig, they shaved me (face and neck), bathed me( i was in boxers and a tank top), and everything else you can think of. But i do not think they should make girls take their tops off, bath suites yeah but showing private parts is not right. I'm glad it worked out for the OP

we never even practices on dummies however we used each other for moving and handling. the practice as a patient role is meant to help sudent nurses feel how vulerable it is to be a patient and have anpther stranger providing some very personal care. ITs good be be hoisted, fed, washed turned etc

I've heard this argument before and it sounds just as ridiculous now as it did the first time I heard it. Nurses are not stupid. They do not need to go through these experiences to understand them. Pelvics are uncomfortable - everyone gets that. Having someone else feed or wash you is uncomfortable - everyone gets that. Shots hurt - everyone gets that. There is no need to make students practice on each other. That is what clinicals are for.

I couldn't believe I had seriously read this correctly. There is no way in hell I'd allow a classmate to do a pelvic exam on me. Ever. For any reason. I'd take the school to bat on it, too. Me, personally, didn't allow students in while I was in labor and delivery, either....I'm way too private and I didn't feel like being the Teaching Tool for someone else! (now that I've had OB rotations, however, I'm very glad there are others who were NOT like me!)
Anyway....this seems above and beyond normal expectations. Is one of your classmates supposed to become pregnant, too, so you can practice Leopold maneuvers on her?? It's the student's job to learn the theory and lab skills so that when you're in CLINICAL learning sessions, you actually perform the live skill you learned on mannequins.
Just my opinion!
