or go to nursing school and than find out they are still in the Pre Req phase? I swear I have seen a good number of people do this, and than when I say, "Oh what semester are you in, I am in this semester" they are like, Oh well I am not actually in yet but I start pre reqs soon, or I just started pre reqs. I wonder why that is. Before I started the actual program I would say if asked that I was doing Pre Reqs to get into the nursing program. Or I am on the waitlist for the nursing program.
I don't see the big deal with people in their pre-reqs calling themselves nursing students.
I tell people I'm a nursing student. I'm not majoring in pre-nursing. I'm majoring in nursing. I'm going to tell people what my major is.
Plus,at some other schools, they do non-clinical courses (what some would call "pre-reqs") and clinical courses at the same time.
Saying you are "preparing for nursing school" makes it sound like you are not in school. Normal people don't know the difference between pre-nursing and nursing. And personally, I don't feel like explaining it to them.
Now, if someone tries to get me to answer questions that could only be answered by someone in clinical, then I just tell them I have yet to start clinicals and I'm getting the all bookwork courses done first.
Now the chick who bought the nursing lab kit is an idiot. LOL!
I still think it's dishonest and misrepresenting yourself. But that's just me. IMO until you have been accepted into a nursing program, you're not a nursing student. If you are doing pre reqs so you can apply to, or get your acceptance, you're pre-nursing.
What if, like me last year, you are not in nursing classes, but you are in a nursing program? Would it be dishonest to say that you're a nursing major when as far as the school is concerned you are?
At my school, you apply, probably your senior year of high school, and are accepted into the school, and the nursing major all at the same time. The first year contains absolutely no nursing classes, only the prereqs and gened requirements, and nursing classes and clinicals don't start til the second year...but you are not pre-nursing and are nursing.

I just said that until you are accepted into a nursing program, I wouldn't consider someone a nursing student. Again, this is just my opinion. Others don't have to agree.
If you are in a program though and your first year is only pre req stuff (like you are describing) and not the nursing stuff, than I don't want to hear you (you being general) lecturing me about nursing school, what I should be doing, how it should be, and so on. Until you are actually doing the nursing courses and stuff you have no idea what it's like and it's not the same as the pre req classes. This though I have only mainly seen on the board, not in real life.

So would you have considered me a nursing student last year? I was accepted into the nursing program in February/March of 2009, started the prereqs in August of 2009, but just started my nursing classes 4 weeks ago.

Ok I just clearly defined what I consider a nursing student TWICE. Please go back and read.
My school won't let just anyone declare nursing as their major. You have to be accepted into the program with validation recieved from the nursing department to be allowed to declare a nursing major. So yeah....during pre-req's? I was not a nursing major. I was taking pre-req's.
I think those who say they are nursing students and aren't (yet!) will feel differently once they have put in all the work and gotten accepted. And if the program is all inclusive for pre-req's and getting to the nursing part is automatic, then yeah, you are a nursing student according to your school and are therefore a nursing student. But those who have to take pre-req's to earn their way in aren't nursing students until they get that acceptance letter. I would hate to think that not getting accepted would then look to people like one has flunked out of nursing school, since one was claiming to be a nursing student. That would not be accurate either!
At the end of the day, we don't really care, it is just something we are discussing. You know, those that don't care don't have to join in the conversation.
I am starting to think you are just going to start following any post I make just to make sure you come and disagree with whatever it is I am saying. LOL

I understand discussions, it's where folks chime in and give their opinion. I gave mine: I can't understand why anyone would care about this.
And wow! LOL You flatter yourself, trust me....you don't hit my radar (other than noticing your name after I roll my eyes at a post....I've noticed quite a pattern on that actually).
I just noticed that you actually started this thread, I often notice your posts after I've posted somewhere....but truly, it would be hard to find threads that you haven't posted in.

Lots of people have image problems. I had an aunt who always presented herself as and OR RN. Five years after she died, her daughter told me she was an OR transporter, but "liked it when people thought she was an RN." Anyway, I always said I was a pre-nursing student. When I was accepted into a program, I thought it was appropriate to say I was a "nursing student." Most people figure it out anyway.
