Do you guys see a lot of people saying they are nursing students....

or go to nursing school and than find out they are still in the Pre Req phase? I swear I have seen a good number of people do this, and than when I say, "Oh what semester are you in, I am in this semester" they are like, Oh well I am not actually in yet but I start pre reqs soon, or I just started pre reqs. I wonder why that is. Before I started the actual program I would say if asked that I was doing Pre Reqs to get into the nursing program. Or I am on the waitlist for the nursing program.

Why do you think that?

Agreed. We're at 45 students out of about 400 applications in my BSN program. Just over 1:10.

And it's not a question of having ones accomplishments diminished.

It's a matter of telling the truth.

So, it's not the fact that "NS is different from the Real World that makes you protective of your prerogative and titles?" A paraphrase from your post...but the fact that you feel they're being dishonest? Is this the only form of dishonesty that troubles you this much?

Would someone claiming they were a Law student while in their pre-law program trouble you as much?

I am not sure that venting on a message board is necessarily proof that anyone has "dogged" anyone.

In the example that I gave I was not spluttering with indignation or anything, I just had a discussion with one of the students after class. I didn't seek them out to set them straight, but the subject came up and I told them how it was.

The truth is that its not really like anything you've ever done before. I've given examples of how this can be the case.

When I hear people call themselves nursing students when they are not it annoys me. Maybe it will annoy you too and maybe it won't.

But the point is that it's okay either way.

I do have a flip side to this. We are fixing start clinicals and our instructors were telling us how we knock on the door and introduce ourselves....

A couple of them told us to say....HI I'm (insert name), I will be your nurse today.

I dont feel comfortable saying that. I am not a "Nurse" yet. Im only a student nurse.

I dont feel I should say Im a nurse. I should say I'll be your student nurse today.

I apologize if i have offended anyone here, I did not mean to at all. In my *opinion* I feel that most ASNs are harder to get into than BSN. I say this because a large number of BSN programs (especially in my area) will easily accept student's right out of high school with no prereqs, etc while the ASN programs around here are highly competitive and require numerous prereqs and even the prereqs sometimes are not enough. That being said.. I do realize there are BSN programs that are hard to get into and do not dispute that these students have worked just as hard for their nursing student status. I also understand that some of these programs require students to meet certain criteria prior to beginning their clinical phases and require a separate admissions process for junior/senior level nursing. overall all my only point is that nursing students that have been accepted into any program have worked hard and should have their hard work appreciated by other people in that they do not misrepresent themselves. I never called myself a nursing student before I was. When asked, I would simply say, "I am taking the prereqs for the nursing program and hope to get in this fall." or some variation.

Again, I apologize if I offended you! Best of luck! :):yeah:

I generally get around that by stating, "Hi I'm CuriousMe, I'm a nursing student who will be helping with your care today."

If I were in a Law program it certainly would.

But you're putting up a bit of a straw man here. Speaking for myself it's not like I go into a tizzy every time someone misrepresents themselves, but if I am given the opportunity I think it's my responsibility to help people understand the value of being clear and truthful.

My post which seemed to irritate you was not meant to. My point was not to call anyone a fool or a liar. I thought I was clear that the other options were either being a better person or not being in a program yet. These seemed to be the only options to me at the time. I realize now that it's also possible that a person may just not care but I really do not understand how anyone who has paid or is paying the price can just not care.

This can be presented as "elitism" and maybe it is in some cases.

But maybe it's just borne from a diligence in being honest about things, and a basic discomfort with even inadvertant expressions of untruth.

My ASN program is 72 out of nearly 1500 applications. which would put it at about 1:20.

God smiled at me the day I got the call lol.

---- CuriousMe, In line with the pre-law/law student thing.. If someone is pre-med do you think it would be okay to say they were in med school? hardly!

Never meant to imply that you lost it.....my apologies if my post came off that way. It obviously disturbs you to some extent, that was my only implication.

I admit, the post annoyed me. From my, admittedly cynical, perspective folks generally don't mean a tag of "or they're a better person than I." So, because I disagreed with you....that seemed to me that you were saying the only choices were that I was a fool, lying or not in a program. But like I said, I'm a cynical NY'er

I guess I've just accepted that other's don't have the same diligence about being honest that I do. If I got upset every time someone around me was less then completely honest...well, that's just energy I could use on something else right now, as it does not impact me in the least. To me, the pre-law student saying they're a Law Student, bothers me as much as the pre-nursing student saying they are a nursing student. They both have the same level of impact on my life: none.

There are plenty of other things that do push my buttons...things like cheating. Now, that I would say something about. Anyone in my program who cheats successfully diminishes the reputation of my program. That I would get annoyed about. I've worked to hard.

But someone saying they're in a program before they are? Meh....whatever.

It wouldn't trouble me in the least. Why do I care what kind of student they call themselves? They're in a program or their not. Them stating they're in a program doesn't make it so, and doesn't impact me at all.
