Disrespectful to instructor....

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

OK, It's been a while since I've taken a college course (I graduated over 10 yrs ago...)... but is it just me.... or are students much ruder to professors these days??? :uhoh21:

I CANNOT believe some of the things I am hearing (even on the first day) some people say in class about the teacher and even to him!! After our exam tonight (which was very reasonable) I overheard a woman say... "I hate him"... He was within ear shot and she did not try and whisper... She has caused a lot of problems... (correcting him on spelling errors...very sarcastic behavior...etc) She's just rude... and there are a lot of others like her.

I totally understand questioning the teacher when something doesn't seem right, but some of the stuff that goes on.

He so far has been very fair, handed out multiple outlines, notes, study guides, etc... It is Anatomy, so it is going to be hard, but I don't understand these people....

Anyone have any insight? Has it always been this way and I was just to dumb to notice??? :monkeydance:

I really feel kindof bad for him, because I can tell he really wants us to understand the stuff.... Geesh... give the guy a chance...

Those same students who are rude to instructors and also disrecpectful of their colleagues, preceptors, and managers after graduation. llg

Oh no doubt! I'm glad you found a better teaching situation. I just didn't get it because at the very least I think the quality of students these programs turn out is a reflection back on them. I know a few that I'll be pushing the emergency call button for dear life if they ever show up at my bedside. Its frustrating and sad at the same time. On the flip side, many of my fellow students were awesome and would be a welcome sight.

I have found that there will always be "those" people in your class, there is always at least that "one" person that:

- asks question off topic-wasting the rest of our time-

-is never prepared-doesn't have books/notes/pen/paper

-is loud and disruptive

-never turns off cell

-is absent or extremely tardy-again very disruptive

It's up the their peers to say something to them, if the proff continues to ignore it. The proff may just take it out on them academically-lowering their grade etc.

WHen i was in A&P each time your phone rang it was 5 points and let me tell you NOBODY could afford to lose 5 points for a phone ringing. It happened maybe twice during the whole year. My Professor was old school and if you want to talk to the department head to complain then you might as well forget it because he was the head honcho. Many people hated him, and he taught the class far more like a gross anatomy course, and included things that no other school in the area was requiring. We lost a lot of students due to the academic rigor, but I learned A LOT, and he basically weeded out those that were fooling around and it made the class a lot better.

You are fortunate this Professor has patience. IMHO, it has to do with the Gen Y mentality of me-me-me.

Could be true.

However, our parents generation said the same thing about us. Personally I wouldn't be the cat calling the kettle black, but that's me.

As always, you are certainly entitled to your opinioin.

That's a good approach. Part of the problem with the original posters class is the prof. allows it. If I heard "I hate him" I would have walked up and said "Excuse me. Do you have anything you need to share with me or the class? Otherwise please be quiet so others can finish the test." Rather than ignore it.

...and on a related topic ...

Those same students who are rude to instructors and also disrecpectful of their colleagues, preceptors, and managers after graduation. My full time job is in staff development. The behavior we see in orientation (and inservices) is atrocious. If the instructor says anything, then they complain to their managers who blames us for not supporting their efforts to make these folks happy so that they will stay. The management does not back us up with consequences for poor behavior in class. They just want the holes on their schedule filled.

llg

That's sad. You think the managers would want to nip that kind of behavior in the bud. At least you have the satisfaction of knowing it blows up in their faces eventually.

I am in my 40's and run into people in their 40's and well beyond that are rude. It is not about age. It is our society. One of my young friends from school (19) and I were talking about it. It is almost like the baby boomers feel so very entitled. I had a 70 something woman tell me off when I was at the mall. She was as nasty as could be. I really do not understand this at all!

if they paid to be there they should shut up and get their money's worth

i like the idea of decuting points d/t to cell phone usage...we had a mother here who went to [high] school and screamed at the teacher because he would not allow cell phones in the classroom if they are talking or tapping they aren't learning much

i found that i was in the habit of remembering the rude people and i decided i would focus on the majority of nice people i came in contact with don't need an ulcer

I dunno - I think it IS worse.

I went to college for 4 years after high school and attended a community college, a state college and a university and we would not DARE treat teachers like teachers are treated now.

I returned to school when I was 38 - and I found the same kind of rude behavior spoken of here.

A good friend of mine, who is a year older than me, teaches 8th grade English and she has definitely seen a huge change in behavior problems in class. Just a couple of weeks ago one girl stood up and told her to "F" off. The girl was immediately sent to the principal's office. After she left, one of her friends started telling my friend off in no uncertain words - off she went too. Then a 3rd started in. She too was gone.

There would have been heck to pay, when I was in 8th grade, if I had talked to a teacher like that.

Things have changed, imo.

I'm a LVN, just beginning to go back to school (the plan for 25 years, but "real life" interferes) I'm starting with elementary algebra, to get my feet wet.

I chose this instructor mostly because of what was on her web site.

Cell phone rings? 50 points off for each ring until it has been turned off (heehee I leave mine in my car when i go to class cuz the button to change the ring to silent is on the side, and OFTEN gets pushed while the phone is in my purse) Don't have all your homework done? Forbidden to take the test (and she only requires every other one of homework problems assigned) Homework not handed in on the due date? Lose 30% if handed in on the next class date. Still don't turn it in? no credit, and you STILL have to hand it in to take the exams. 4 absences and she drops you. 4 tardies count as 1 absence. We've lost some kids cuz they don't want to do things her way (remember, this is a developemental math class) She wants us to UNDERSTAND what we're doing, do all the steps on paper. One kid kept wanting me to share my book, paper, markers, wanting me to explain thigns to him and copy my answers. he'd say "I know the answer is this, why do I have to do the work?" etc. Heck I DON'T DO MY OWN KIDS' WORK FOR THEM, why would I do HIS??

I've ALWAYS had trouble with algebra; I actually don't fee stupid in this class. This instructor has a system in place to get us to LEARN, and I have a great deal of respect for her for sticking to it!

I went to LPN school with people who would bent out of shape if the instructor didn't hand out worksheets for every chapter. What was on the worksheets was the same things in the book, though.

Quite honestly a few people thought nursing school would be cake, and treated it as such. Those were the people that didn't make it.

Had an English prof. who gave assignments, and in a class of 30, MAYBE 4 people did all of the work. Quite a few people flunked, and were so surprised that they did, and degraded the instructor personally for it.

And it had nothing to do with age. All of the people i described didn't fall into any particular age range or generation, it was a wide range.
