Disrespect & Profanity

I've got a couple of burrs under my saddle blanket and am requesting feedback from the allnurses community regarding professional behaviors:

I believe:

Someone should be referred to with their title of Ms, Mrs, Mr, Dr, etc. and their surname until permission is granted otherwise.

Profanity in professional situations is rarely acceptable and if so used, should be in consensual agreement, e.g. "May I speak frankly?"

It gets my goat how some believe they have the freedom to address another or use language that is not becoming to a professional relationship.

My wife, medical nurse Belinda, told me that at Anomaly Memorial Hospital the staff are encouraged to refer to the patients by their first names because it comes across as being more friendly.

In reading some articles on the internet, profanity is condoned and supported in some professional situations because it "releases tension".

"Bullhockey!" say I.

In my experiences, respect is received, even with Salt-of-the-Earth Psychotics, by giving them respect. And that respect, reinforced, has prevented escalating patients from experiencing total meltdowns: The statement, "I expect you to give me the same respect I give you" has caused many an angry patient to take pause.

I think of the multitude of smiles I've received, asking a patient, "May I call you...?" Or: "What would you like to be called?"

Profanity is rarely necessary in a professional situation. The use of profanity can be a sign of loss of control, or apathy. I hear profanity from an acquaintance as their way of saying, "I can say whatever I want with no regard to you".

I truly enjoy using euphemisms to say the vilest thing in the sweetest, most respectful way. Forms of the word "imprudent" has become one of my favs as of late: "You can't fix imprudence" sounds so much more respectful than the mainstream saying. Or: "How imprudent of administration to do that!"

Euphemisms help to take the focus of how something is said and puts the focus on what is said.

What do you think?

I don't understand the confusion, as we all knew something was going to be held against one, if one was to be terminated.

Got it. Sorry.

You said you didn't know what the reason would be for you being fired. But of course we know the reason. You didn't give up on holding them accountable.

What you didn't know was what pretext they were going to use. That's what they had to scramble to come up with.

On a semi-unrelated note: on the news today, there are a hundred health care workers in Boston who are now positive for coronavirus. But a hospital administrator from there gave us the good news: They didn't all catch it from being at work. No. Some of them caught it in their communities.

Because we all know a hospital administrator can look at a person's forehead (via Skype) and know where they became infected. Just because they're working in an environment where sick people are concentrated and are reusing PPE doesn't mean that's where they got sick!

These are the kind of people you're dealing with Davey. We've all dealt with them ad nauseum. It isn't always the cream that rises to the top; sometimes it's the scum.

I guarantee you in a short time you'll wonder how you stood it this long and you'll actually feel gratitude toward these numbskulls.

So they used “someone’s” participation on AN as a reason to terminate? Not the first time, probably not the last. Does not change my opinion of Wrongway and its administration. Clark’s employment lives on to enlighten and impress all. Never ceases to amaze me how employees like that thrive to exemplify employers like that. Sorry this happened Davey.

And I want to point out that nowhere did Davey cast aspersions on anyone, living, dead or fictitious. All he did was describe behaviours. No one has to wear any shoes that don't fit.

Seventeen years, and I'm sure that morale will be at an all time high, now.

Oops! Truthfully, I meant "morale will be at an all time low.

(I was being facetious.)

Edit: I wanted to add that I truly enjoyed reading your entire post, TriciaJ.

And if your opinion is based on an "honest opinion", caliotter, "generally, a person cannot be held liable, either criminally or civilly for anything written or spoken about a person or topic, so long as it is truthful or based on an honest opinion, and such statements".

I've just gotten through reviewing all my posts in this thread, and all are "truthful or based on an honest opinion".

I will stand behind what I've said.

It would be tempting for another "someone" to divulge the identity of Wrongway but then AN would be forced to remove all evidence in deference to Wrongway, errr, I mean Rightway you know. I see nothing amusing about this turn of affairs. No more than I support the censoring of member personal opinions of certain employers. If you can't speak the truth about an entity, then why are other opinions allowed to be expressed?

?? ? ? ? to your post, caliotter.

My present employer is seeking employees. Davey I would refer you to my employer but I doubt you would be interested or even able to relocate.

So is my former employer- isn't that odd?

I honestly don't know whether to offer my condolences or congratulations on your parting ways with Wrongway. So... I'll go for congratulations!

Welcome to unemployment! Or maybe early retirement? Either way, file for that unemployment. There will be that nice $600 bump on top of what you qualify for if I am reading that bill right. Heck with so many people filing now the entire system is so overwhelmed I am pretty sure unless there is a clear reason to deny pretty much all claims should be going through.

I'm voting for congratulations as well. Although I imagine today has to be a bit discombobulating for Davey. No matter. We all have your back. And welcome to life on this side of the divide. This is where life truly begins...
