Dismissal From Nursing Program - Is all hope lost?

Has anyone ever been dismissed due to non-academic reasons? My GPA is not too bad, but due to other reasons I was dismissed from a four year program during my first year due to a unprofessional email exchange with a tutor. I am left wondering if any other nursing programs will accept me due to this reason. I don’t think the fact that I was dismissed shows up on transcripts, but it does seem to be a top questions when one is trying to transfer into a new nursing program after already being accepted and attending one recently. Is there any hope out there? Any similar experiences?

Polly - you are spreading misinformation about the application process and it reflects poorly on your ability to properly guide any potential student during their application process. You should refrain from misguiding those much younger than you in any form.

You sound young.  You sound like you may has a difficult time owning your own stuff.  You sound like you think that verbosity takes the place of ownership of your aforementioned stuff.

This  may reflect poorly on you as a potential candidate for any program.

Oh, I see.. I consider that negligence on the part of the nursing program that dismissed her for not requesting proper documentation prior to admittance. Following that by ruining her life by dismissing her shortly there after.

"She" sounds like she felt she had something to hide.

There isn’t a method to search what previous schools have been attended hence requirements to submit previous transcripts & list previous schools attended. If there is I am not aware how one would search and with the high number of applications would be impossible.

It sounds like you are reacting to your situation  with your comments about the school ruining her life( your life?) & school being “ desperate for the dough”. Not the case with 3 applicants for each slot available. You have alluded you are being asked by the programs you are trying to get accepted to.

The issue about not disclosing the requested information and the basis for dismissing student was because she lied on the application. It is about integrity, dignity, trustworthy & morals. Many schools have policies about lying. Cheating also gets people kicked out of schools.

You sent an email that reflected poorly on your character and now are suffering consequences of your behavior.

Bravo! I would like to add that almost all schools have an honor code which details things that can cause dismissal.

In addition many of the OP’s comments show a level of immaturity! So I will say this. As I approach my 60th birthday with over 20 years experience, I have come to understand that there are mean nasty jerks in this world and you just have to deal with them. The use of profanity is never acceptable in any professional setting. There many acceptable ways to defend oneself

comments such as “rude people would get subpar treatment from OP and inability to cope with the stress of the pandemic and being triggered by mean comments are not signs of being ready for nursing school. I learned a very long time ago to embrace and concentrate on correcting my own character deficits would lead to a successful life no matter which direction I went.

just my two cents.,

OK, obviously, I won’t curse ANYONE off again for being incompetent through a email interaction. I will also allow myself to be subjected to the misgivings and intolerance of others for the rest of my life while I bite my tongue and never defend myself. But besides owning all that, what else can I do besides nursing school with the nursing prerequisites I have now?

I imagine they're going to ask why you were dismissed. Nursing, and nursing academia, are not large circles. Those at the new program may even know some at the previous program, so they may have some backstory already. Be very cautious about how you frame the incident. They're going to be looking for evidence of insight into what led to your dismissal, remorse, reflection on how your behavior in the interaction was problematic and could have been better, how it could have translated into practice, and changes you have made.

Based on what is quoted above, I can sense that you still have strong feelings from the incident and likely feel wronged. I know I don't know the story behind what happened to you and please understand that I'm not passing judgment on you at all. The goal here is to get your nursing education back on track. Take it as a learning experience to always be cautious about how you interact with others professionally, even if you're still just in school. Best of luck.

The students don't just get dismissed easily from the program.  If they were removed from the program for the slightest problem, the room would be empty.

Well you’re the one having trouble getting into another nursing program. I attended 4 nursing programs from LPN, ADN, RN to BSN & MSN in 3 different states. I have also taught in 3 different nursing programs. They all required transcripts from every school attended. You can see I have over 40 years experience, about to start my 45th year as a nurse so have lots of accurate information for those that will heed it. You however don’t seem to like the information given to you. So are you saying the programs you are now applying to are not asking for transcripts from all schools you have attended? They are asking questions obviously. You sound very immature overall.

Not when there are 3 or more applications for each slot or in some programs waiting lists. Minor issues are addressed but cheating and lying on application is grounds for getting kicked out or using profanity in email apparently.

Those are big problems.

It depends on what was said in the email. Was the content non-excusable? For instance, some bantering may indicate that this field may not suit you. Only you can answer that for yourself. If you shouldn’t say it aloud, then it should not be written in any form of communication whether electronic or otherwise. Did someone touch a nerve? Patients can get to your nerves quicker than anything, so can an egotistical Dr. You have to keep your cool, maintain tact and dignity. There is still a way to get your point across without crossing the line.

Dr. Duntsch he thought everyone was incompetent around him as well… if you don’t know who that is I suggest a Google search of “Dr death”.

Well said. I congratulate you on accepting your character deficits and making the best of them.
